A vow renewal is a second ceremony — formal or informal — in which a couple reaffirms their marriage commitment, usually on a significant anniversary. The 10th, 25th, and 50th wedding anniversaries are the most common occasions for renewal ceremonies, though couples also choose them after major life challenges, significant personal milestones, or simply because the first wedding didn't feel like enough of a celebration.
Photographing a vow renewal carries a different emotional quality from photographing a first wedding. The language is retrospective as well as prospective — these vows are spoken knowing what the promises have already required. The couple's faces at a vow renewal show something a first wedding can't contain: the evidence of having kept those promises. It's among the most moving photography I do.
Vow renewals exist on a spectrum from the highly formal — a ceremony officiated in a church or licensed venue with guests, flowers, and a formal reception — to the entirely intimate, with just the two of you making private vows in a favourite place. Most fall somewhere in the middle: a small gathering of close family, a beautiful setting, a simple ceremony, and a celebratory meal or drinks afterwards.
The photography commission scales accordingly. A formal renewal with guests requires coverage similar to a small wedding. An intimate renewal with just the couple is closer to a couples portrait session with a ceremony embedded in it. I work across the full range and will discuss your specific plans during consultation to ensure the photography matches what you're organising.
For couples renewing vows on a significant anniversary, wearing the original wedding dress — if it still fits or can be altered — creates a genuinely powerful visual continuity between the original wedding photographs and the renewal photographs. Not everyone wants this, and it's entirely optional, but for couples who do choose it, the images have a dimension that purely contemporary photography can't achieve: the same dress, two different people (older, settled, scarred and grown), the same love across decades.
For couples married elsewhere who are now based in Cambridge or Cambridgeshire, a vow renewal photographed in Cambridge uses the chapter of the marriage where you actually live. The riverside, the college gardens, the city architecture — these settings create a renewal record that's specific to the current geography of the marriage rather than retrospective. It documents where the love is now, not only where it began.
