An engagement session is not a wedding photoshoot — it's a chance to spend an unhurried hour or two with each other (and me), getting comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day itself. The right location matters less than the right energy, but the right location helps. These are my twelve favourites.
01 · Romantic, pastoral, English
Grantchester Meadows + Orchard Tea Garden
- Best time:
- Late afternoon, May–September
- Route:
- Walk from the Mill Pond along the river two miles upstream; finish with tea at the Orchard. About 90 minutes.
The walk Rupert Brooke and the Bloomsbury group used. Wildflowers, meandering river, mature trees. Bring sensible shoes and don't overdress.
02 · Quiet, magical, exclusive feeling
The Backs at Sunrise
- Best time:
- Sunrise (45 minutes before to 30 minutes after)
- Route:
- Meet at Queen's Road, walk south past King's, Clare and Trinity. 45 minutes.
The trick with Cambridge centre is timing — at sunrise you have the entire view of the colleges to yourselves. Worth the early alarm.
03 · City, lived-in, atmospheric
Cambridge Market Square + Trinity Lane
- Best time:
- Tuesday or Saturday morning
- Route:
- Start at the market, move into Trinity Lane and Senate House Passage. 45 minutes.
For couples who want the session to feel like Cambridge as a real city, not a postcard. Best on market days for atmosphere.
04 · Iconic, fun, slightly absurd
Punting from Magdalene to Silver Street
- Best time:
- Late afternoon
- Route:
- Book a chauffeured punt for one hour. Set off downstream from Magdalene Bridge.
I shoot from the bank in places and from the punt in others. Wear something you don't mind getting slightly damp at the edges. Always chauffeured — never DIY for a session.
05 · Lush, intimate, weather-proof
Botanic Garden Glasshouses
- Best time:
- Anytime — best on rainy days
- Route:
- Through the main entrance, into the tropical glasshouses, out through the rock garden. 60 minutes.
My standard rain plan and an extraordinary location in its own right. Tropical leaves, soft warm light, easy framing. Garden admission applies.
06 · Cinematic, simple, classic
Jesus Green Tree Avenue at Golden Hour
- Best time:
- Golden hour, autumn especially
- Route:
- Meet at the Maids Causeway end. Walk the avenue south to the river. 30 minutes.
One of my favourite single locations in Cambridge. The locked horse-chestnut avenue at golden hour produces some of the most cinematic frames I shoot.
07 · Relaxed, after-work, real
Mill Pond + The Mill Pub
- Best time:
- Friday evening, summer
- Route:
- Meet at Silver Street Bridge. Photographs around the pond, walk along Granta Place, finish with a drink at The Mill.
For couples who want the session to feel like their actual relationship rather than performance. Pints at the end are part of the deal.
08 · Grand, sweeping, autumnal
Wimpole Estate Avenue
- Best time:
- October–November for autumn colour
- Route:
- Park at Wimpole; walk the main avenue to the gothic ruin. National Trust permit required.
Drive 25 minutes from central Cambridge. The 18th-century lime avenue is one of the most photogenic single locations in Cambridgeshire.
09 · Frozen, sculptural, dramatic
Anglesey Abbey Winter Garden
- Best time:
- January–February
- Route:
- Meet at Anglesey Abbey; walk the winter garden. 60 minutes.
For couples engaged over Christmas and shooting in winter — the winter garden is genuinely the best location in the country for cold-season sessions.
10 · Wild, unexpected, off-the-beaten-track
Cherry Hinton Chalk Pits
- Best time:
- Spring through autumn
- Route:
- Park at Lime Kiln Hill, walk the disused chalk pits. 60 minutes.
Almost no one expects this in Cambridge. White chalk cliffs, mature trees, eerie quiet. Brilliant for couples who want something different.
11 · Open, breezy, dog-friendly
Stourbridge Common + the river
- Best time:
- Late afternoon
- Route:
- Park at Riverside, walk Stourbridge Common to Fen Ditton along the river. 60 minutes.
Cambridge's least-known riverside walk. Wide open grass, cattle grazing in summer (yes, free-roaming), the river curving away. Excellent if you want to bring a dog.
12 · Estate, refined, manor-grounds feeling
Madingley Hall Grounds
- Best time:
- May–September
- Route:
- By prior arrangement only — venue access needed.
Elizabethan hall with 600+ acres. Excellent for couples already booking their wedding here. Stunning grounds even when the hall itself isn't accessible.
