Centuries of history, architectural drama, and extraordinary landscapes. Documentary wedding photography at the UK's most spectacular castle venues.
Castle Wedding Photography
A castle wedding is one of the most visually extraordinary experiences in wedding photography. The combination of ancient stone architecture, centuries of history, dramatic landscapes, and the theatrical light of the British Isles creates settings that no modern venue can replicate.
Whether you're getting married in a Scottish Highland castle overlooking a loch, a medieval English castle with its own great hall and moat, or a Welsh fortified estate surrounded by hills, the photographic possibilities are extraordinary. I work with the architecture, the available light, and the historic atmosphere of each venue to create a body of work that captures the full scale and beauty of your castle wedding day.
My approach is documentary: I observe, anticipate, and photograph genuinely as it unfolds, creating an authentic record of your day in one of the UK's most spectacular settings — without staging, posing, or interrupting the natural progression of the day.
Venue Types
Eilean Donan, Inveraray, Dundas, Dundurn, Glenapp — Scottish castle weddings offer some of the most dramatic wedding photography settings in the world. Ancient stonework, loch reflections, Highland landscapes, and the theatrical light of Scottish skies combine to create unforgettable imagery.
Fonmon Castle, Plas Dinam, Bodelwyddan Castle, Soughton Hall — Wales has a rich castle and historic house wedding venue tradition. The combination of medieval architecture, Welsh countryside, and Celtic atmosphere produces distinctive, characterful photography.
Hever Castle (Kent), Leeds Castle (Kent), Thornbury Castle (Gloucestershire), Amberley Castle (West Sussex), Berkeley Castle — England's castle wedding venues range from fully converted luxury hotels to working historic estates, each with extraordinary architectural settings.
The Border country and Northumberland offer peel towers and fortified manor houses with castle-like character — Belsay Hall, Chillingham Castle, Langley Castle — providing a more intimate scale than grand Highland castles but with equally powerful photographic impact.
Dromoland Castle, Ashford Castle, Castle Leslie, Luttrellstown Castle — Ireland's castle wedding venues combine medieval architecture with manicured Irish countryside. Available for destination bookings with flights included in the day rate.
Many English manors and fortified farmhouses have castle-like character without full medieval fortifications — crenellated walls, towers, moats. These venues offer castle aesthetics with the intimacy and comfort of a country house.

Why Choose Me
Castle venues provide architectural settings of unparalleled drama — stone towers, great halls, battlements, spiral staircases, drawbridges. I work with the architecture as a compositional element, creating portraits that convey the full visual spectacle of your venue.
Castles have particular light qualities — deep window embrasures casting dramatic side-light, great hall clerestory windows flooding spaces with directional beams, torch-lit corridors. I work entirely in available and natural light at castle weddings, using the architecture's own lighting as the foundation.
Castle grounds range from formal gardens and moats to wild Highland landscapes. I plan the most photogenic portrait locations in advance from a venue briefing, ensuring we make the most of the full estate — not just the main building.
Castle weddings tend to be grand and complex occasions. My documentary approach means I cover all the key moments without disruption — from the intimate getting-ready scenes to the ceremonial grandeur of the main hall, to the portraits in the grounds.
I travel throughout the UK for castle weddings — Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and every county of England. Flights and accommodation for destination castle bookings are arranged and included in the full-day rate.
For castle weddings I always request a detailed venue briefing or site visit in advance. The scale and complexity of castle venues rewards preparation — knowing in advance where the best light falls at 4pm in October, or which corridor connects two key rooms, makes a material difference to the photography.
Yes — Scotland is one of the most requested destinations for castle wedding photography. I cover all Scottish castle venues including those in the Highlands, the Scottish Borders, and the Central Belt. Flights and accommodation are arranged for Scottish bookings.
Castle venues present specific photographic challenges — very dark stone interiors, very bright exterior stonework, and deep contrasts between indoors and out. These are challenges I work with rather than against: the dramatic contrast between dark stone and bright sky is one of the defining visual qualities of castle wedding photography.
Thornbury Castle in Gloucestershire, Amberley Castle in West Sussex, Hever Castle and Leeds Castle in Kent, Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, and Chillingham Castle in Northumberland are among the most photographically exceptional English castle venues. I have experience at several of these and am happy to advise on specific venues.
Many castle venues have restrictions on flash photography — both for conservation reasons and because the wrong kind of artificial lighting destroys the atmosphere of a candlelit great hall. I work in available light as a priority, using high-sensitivity cameras to capture the true atmosphere of your castle setting. Where flash is permitted and appropriate, I use an invisible off-camera set-up.
For castle weddings outside my 50-mile travel radius, transport and accommodation costs are either included in the day rate or charged at actual cost. I'm transparent about this in initial enquiries — there are no surprise fees after booking.
