The broad meadow between Christ Church and the Thames — one of Oxford's most iconic open spaces and consistently one of the finest portrait settings in England. Long grass, the river walk by the Cherwell and the Thames, the Meadow Building in the background, and almost complete absence of tourist traffic in early morning.

University Parks

70 acres of mature parkland with the River Cherwell along the eastern boundary — cherry blossom and magnolias in April, deep shade and dappled light through summer, extraordinary copper beeches in autumn. The most consistently beautiful park setting in Oxford throughout the year.

Port Meadow

The ancient 440-acre common north of the city — wild, open, with the Thames running along one edge and the Oxford spires visible on the southern skyline. For couples wanting a genuinely wild, wide-sky context rather than manicured parkland, Port Meadow at golden hour is extraordinary.

The Botanic Garden

Oxford's Botanic Garden — the oldest in Britain — with its walled sections, the Cherwell border, the glasshouses, and the variety of plant environments packed into a compact riverside site. Seasonal variety is exceptional: tulips in April, roses in June, rich autumn colour in October.

Grantchester-upon-Cherwell & Cherwell Valley

The Cherwell valley north of Oxford — the river path from Cherwell Valley to Marston Ferry Road, with willows, water reflections, and long riverside meadows. Quiet, genuinely beautiful, and consistently under-used by photographers.

South Park viewpoint

When is the best time for an Oxford engagement session?+

Spring (late March to May) for blossom — the University Parks cherry walk, the Botanic Garden tulips, and the meadow wild flowers. Autumn (October) for the copper beeches and the low golden light. Summer evenings at golden hour for the Port Meadow skyline. Each season produces very different images at Oxford; the photography works year-round.

Is the Botanic Garden open for photography?+

Yes — Oxford Botanic Garden charges standard entry. I advise all couples of any entry costs at booked locations beforehand. Photography sessions within the Botanic Garden are permitted for personal use at standard entry prices.

Can we combine Oxford with another Cotswolds location?+

Easily — Oxford is ideally placed for combining with a second Cotswolds or Oxfordshire location on the same day. Blenheim Palace Park (10 minutes), Rousham House garden (20 minutes), or the Rollright Stones (30 minutes) all make excellent second-location partners for a half-day Oxford session.

Do you photograph Oxford weddings as well?+

Yes — Bodleian Library events, Christ Church Dining Hall receptions, Merton College, and many Oxford venues host wedding ceremonies and receptions. Oxford wedding photography commissions for 2026 and 2027 are available; please contact me with your date and venue.
