Devon contains some of England's most varied and beautiful landscape for family photography: the high granite moorland of Dartmoor, the red sandstone coast of East Devon, the spectacular surf beaches of the North Devon AONB, and the deep, wooded river valleys that connect them. Whether you live in Devon or are visiting on holiday, the county provides an extraordinary setting for natural family portraits.
I follow families in Devon rather than directing them — working with the particular quality of Devon's Atlantic light, its wide skies, and its landscape character to photograph your family as they actually are. The best family portraits from any session are the ones where everyone has forgotten they're being photographed.

Atlantic light
Devon's position on England's Atlantic edge gives it a quality of light that is distinct from anywhere else in England — softer, more diffused, with more hours of golden-quality light and more atmospheric weather effects than the continental south-east. That light quality translates directly into family portraits of luminous, warm character.
Landscape variety
No English county packs more photographic landscape variety into its borders than Devon. Dartmoor's granite wilderness, the red sandstone coast, the Exe estuary's tidal mudflats, North Devon's surf beaches, and the wooded combes of the interior create completely different family portrait environments within 90 minutes of each other.
Holiday portrait opportunities
A significant proportion of Devon family portrait sessions are for families visiting on holiday — combining a Devon coastal or moorland family session with their annual holiday adds lasting value to a week that would otherwise be recorded only on phone cameras. I accommodate holiday portrait bookings flexibly.
National Park access
Dartmoor National Park is publicly accessible in a way that most English upland landscapes are not — the moorland, tor outcrops, and river valleys are open for walking and photography without restriction. This means family portrait sessions on the moor can be taken wherever the best light falls, without access fees or venue restrictions.
Locations
Dartmoor National Park
Dartmoor is one of England's most dramatic and photogenic national parks — high moorland, granite tor outcrops, ancient oak woodland in deep river valleys, and a wild Atlantic sky that changes quality of light minute by minute. The moor's character in every season is exceptional: heather-purple late summer, frosted granite tors in winter, deep green valley oakwood in spring and summer.
East Devon Coast
The East Devon AONB coastline — red sandstone cliffs from Sidmouth to Seaton, the chalk stacks at Beer, and the shingle ridge of Slapton — provides family portrait settings of immediate coastal drama. The warm red of Devon sandstone in afternoon light is characteristic and unique to this part of England.
Exe Valley & Exmoor Edge
The Exe Valley from Exeter to Tiverton, and the lower edge of Exmoor above Dulverton, provide gentle river and moorland edge portrait landscapes of great photographic quality without the exposed character of high Dartmoor. These are particularly good for sessions with young children — sheltered valley light and varied terrain without high moorland exposure.
North Devon & Croyde
North Devon's surf beaches — Croyde, Saunton Sands, and the Taw-Torridge estuary — provide beach and coastal portrait settings that are visually very different from the red sandstone coast. Saunton Sands in particular, three miles of north-facing beach backed by the Braunton Burrows dunes, is consistently one of England's most beautiful beaches for family photography.
Yes — Devon is a regular destination. I photograph natural family portraits across the county, from Dartmoor's granite tors to the East Devon coast's red sandstone cliffs and the North Devon surf beaches. Contact me to discuss locations and dates for your session.
Dartmoor provides the most dramatic landscape — Haytor, Hound Tor, and the Teign Gorge oakwood are all outstanding. For coastal sessions, Saunton Sands on the North Devon coast and the sandstone cliffs around Sidmouth are exceptional. The Exe Valley woodland and the gardens of Killerton Estate (National Trust) are good choices for sessions with young children.
Yes — beach sessions work beautifully for families with children of all ages. I'll advise on tide times, best light direction for your chosen beach, and seasonal considerations (North Devon beaches can be very busy in July and August; the East Devon coast is quieter and often better for photography). Golden hour beach sessions in summer are consistently the most beautiful.
Each season has strong photographic qualities in Devon. Spring is exceptional — bright green and wildflower meadows, bluebell woodland, and reliable good weather. Autumn on Dartmoor is outstanding — bracken going russet, heather fading, dramatic cloud. North Devon beach sessions work best June–September. Any season can produce beautiful family photographs in Devon.
Yes — Devon has a large and characterful holiday cottage stock, and I photograph family sessions at booked accommodation throughout the county. A private garden or moorland-edge farmhouse setting can provide very beautiful, intimate family portraits that also record the particular place your family visited. Contact me to discuss your accommodation location.
