Newbury is West Berkshire's principal market town — a prosperous commercial centre on the Kennet & Avon Canal and at the foot of the North Wessex Downs AONB. The town is best known for Newbury Racecourse and as the headquarters of Vodafone, but it is the extraordinary surrounding landscape that makes Newbury a rich area for portrait photography: the beautiful canal, the dramatic Donnington Castle ruins perched above the valley, and the rolling chalk downland of one of England's most beautiful AONBs extending northward from the town.
The area within 20 miles of Newbury includes some of the finest portrait backdrops in the south of England: Highclere Castle to the south, Combe Gibbet on the Berkshire/Hampshire border to the west, and the beautiful Vale of the White Horse to the north.
