Chelmsford — Essex's county town and England's newest city (as of 2012) — has some fine portrait locations: Hylands Park's Grade II* listed house and its 574 acres of parkland and restored walled garden, Central Park's riverside meadows along the River Can, and the Chelmer Valley nature reserve. Within 20 minutes lie the Dedham Vale and the Essex countryside that still feels surprisingly rural.
