How I handle UK weather — a clear policy for outdoor sessions, with honest guidance on what actually affects photography and what doesn't.

Outdoor photography in the UK requires a clear weather policy. Most sessions proceed in light rain, heavy cloud, and almost any conditions short of a genuine storm — in fact, overcast skies often produce better portrait light than direct sunshine.
Session-affecting weather is specifically: heavy continuous rain that would make participants uncomfortable and equipment unsafe; dangerously high winds; thunder and lightning. Overcast skies, intermittent showers, cold weather and high wind that isn't dangerous are not grounds for rescheduling.
I communicate actively in the days before outdoor sessions when weather is uncertain — with a go/no-go decision made no later than the evening before the session, giving everyone time to adjust plans.
Overcast skies produce softer, more even light that is genuinely better for portrait photography than direct sunshine, which creates harsh shadows. Never cancel a session because the sun isn't out.
Clients who wish to reschedule due to personal weather preference (rather than genuinely unsafe conditions) may do so with at least 48 hours' notice. One no-cost reschedule is included. Subsequent reschedules are charged at £50.
If I cancel a session due to weather, there is no additional cost and rebooking is given priority placement in the calendar.
For uncertain forecasts: I make a provisional decision 48 hours out, and a final decision by 7pm the evening before the session. I contact clients immediately. We do not meet at a location and then decide — everyone knows before leaving home.
For some session types, an indoor backup plan can be arranged at the booking stage. Not all sessions have indoor alternatives — this is something to discuss when booking if you're concerned about your session date.
Autumn, winter and early spring sessions have a higher weather-management workload. Sessions booked during these periods should expect more active weather communication in the days beforehand.
