The Amalfi Coast is one of the world's most dramatic and beautiful landscapes — cliffs dropping hundreds of metres to a deep blue Mediterranean sea, pastel-coloured towns clinging to the rock, lemon orchards and bougainvillea cascading over ancient stone walls. For UK couples dreaming of a destination wedding or elopement in Italy, the Amalfi Coast offers something truly extraordinary — and photographs that will stop anyone in their tracks.

Why the Amalfi Coast for Your Wedding?

The Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching 34 kilometres of the Sorrentine Peninsula south of Naples. Each town on the coast has its own distinct character — here are the main destinations for UK couples:

• ◆Ravello: Perched 350 metres above the sea, Ravello is the most sophisticated and cultural town on the coast. Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo host weddings with views across the Tyrrhenian Sea that are impossible to describe in words.
• ◆Positano: The most photographed town on the coast — stacked houses tumbling down the cliff face, the iconic domed church of Santa Maria Assunta, fishing boats below. Intimate and romantic.
• ◆Amalfi: The historic capital of the old Maritime Republic — the Cathedral of Saint Andrew dominates the piazza, and the narrow medieval lanes create intimate portrait opportunities.
• ◆Praiano: Less visited than Positano and therefore quieter — a genuine working fishing village with dramatic cliffs and spectacular sunrise photography.
• ◆Furore: A tiny hamlet built into a fjord — a remarkable and unusual location that creates completely different images from the standard Amalfi coast look.

Best Time to Visit for Photography

The Amalfi Coast is busiest in July and August — beautiful but crowded, and the midday heat is intense. For the best photography conditions:

• ◆May and June: The best combination of warmth, manageable crowds, and lush spring colour. Lemons are at their most abundant and vibrant. Perfect temperatures for photography.
• ◆September and October: The sea is still warm, the light has the beautiful golden quality of Italian autumn, and the tourist crowds have largely gone. My personal favourite time.
• ◆Late April: The most beautiful light and very few tourists — but the sea is still cool for swimming. Best for photography without the crowds.
• ◆Avoid August: Extremely crowded, hot midday conditions make shooting difficult, and prices are at their maximum. The quality of light is also harder to work with.

Eloping on the Amalfi Coast

UK couples can legally marry in Italy — the process involves some advance paperwork and typically requires an Italian wedding planner to navigate the legal requirements. Planning typically begins 6–12 months in advance.

Alternatively, many couples celebrate a symbolic ceremony at a beautiful villa or viewpoint, followed by the legal civil ceremony back home. This gives maximum freedom for the location and ceremony style.
