Beach family photography has a specific, enduring appeal. Children at the sea are at their most liberated and natural — running, splashing, building sandcastles, collecting shells, sitting in the sand staring at the waves. These are the activities that produce the natural, joyful family photographs that parents most value in the long run. And southern England's coast — from the white cliffs of Kent to the sand dunes of North Dorset — provides some of Britain's finest settings for exactly this kind of session.
West Wittering, West Sussex. Among the finest sandy beaches on the south coast, West Wittering is accessible and properly sandy (rather than the shingle that characterises much of the Sussex coast). The dunes behind the beach create photogenic foreground and a degree of shelter. Early morning or evening sessions here produce beautiful warm light over the water.
Camber Sands, East Sussex. The large dune system at Camber, behind the long beach, is one of the most dramatically photogenic coastal elements in South East England. Family sessions that move between beach and dunes produce variety within a single location. The beach can become crowded in summer; morning sessions are significantly more manageable.
Studland Beach, Dorset. Studland — a National Trust beach in Purbeck — provides sand, heath, the view across Poole Harbour to the Purbeck Hills, and the iconic natural landmark of Old Harry Rocks visible from the cliff path at the northern end of the beach. This is a more involved travel commitment than South East England beaches but rewards with arguably the finest coastal landscape.
Birling Gap and Seven Sisters, East Sussex. The chalk cliff landscape at Birling Gap, with its beach accessible below the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs, provides dramatic vertical-cliff portrait backdrops unlike any other southern coast location. Best for families with children old enough to manage the cliff path steps rather than very young children.
Sunset beach sessions produce beautiful warm light but require working around the beach's evening crowd. Sunrise sessions (rare but rewarding with cooperative older children) provide empty beach and extraordinary light. Late morning in shoulder season (May, early June, late August, September) offers the most practical combination of manageable weather, good light, and reasonable crowds.
Tide awareness matters — some beach sections are inaccessible or dramatically different depending on tide state. Check the tide table before planning your session, particularly at locations like Birling Gap where the beach disappears at high tide.
