Getting married in a Cambridge college is unlike any other wedding experience in England. Ancient stone courts, candlelit dining halls, manicured Fellows' Gardens, and the knowledge that the same buildings have witnessed centuries of history — it creates an atmosphere that photographs with extraordinary depth. This guide covers everything you need to know about college wedding photography: which colleges host weddings, what to expect on the day, and how to get the most from these extraordinary venues.
Not all colleges are licensed for weddings — and those that are tend to be highly sought after. Currently licensed for civil ceremonies and receptions include:
💡 Important: College licensing changes and availability is extremely limited. Always contact the college directly as early as possible — ideally 12–18 months in advance. Mention your photographer at the initial enquiry stage, as some colleges have photography restrictions.

Cambridge college weddings work in every season — each offers something completely different photographically. That said, some timings deserve special mention:
Late April and May bring blossom to The Backs — cherry and apple trees in bloom against the stone are incredible. This is peak beauty season for riverside portraits. The light is soft and warm without the harsh contrasts of high summer.
June to August gives long evenings and golden hour that lasts until 9pm. Fellows' Gardens are in full bloom. The downside: tourist seasons mean the colleges and riverbanks can be crowded during the day. Early morning ceremonies make the most of quiet, magical Cambridge.
September and October bring extraordinary warmth of colour — copper beeches, turning horse chestnuts, and the soft golden light of autumn makes stone buildings glow. Often the best time of year photographically.
Winter weddings in colleges are genuinely magical — candlelit halls, frost on cobblestones, and the drama of dark stone against grey skies have a gothic romance that summer simply cannot replicate.
Cambridge college weddings have specific logistical points that your photographer needs to know about in advance:
