The Chiltern Hills AONB runs across the southern third of Buckinghamshire in a band roughly 15 miles wide and 30 miles long, from the Thames at Marlow in the south to Wendover in the north. Within that band is some of England's most varied and photogenic landscape for family portraits: chalk grassland escarpments with long views south across the Thames Valley, ancient beech woodland at Burnham Beeches and Ashridge, managed parkland at Stowe and Cliveden, and quiet agricultural valleys with brick-and-flint villages. All within 40 minutes of London Marylebone.
Burnham Beeches in south Buckinghamshire is managed by the City of London Corporation and comprises 220 hectares of ancient woodland centred on a collection of pollarded beech trees of extraordinary age and sculptural character. These trees — some estimated to be 400 years old, with massive gnarled trunks and spreading canopies — create a woodland backdrop unlike anywhere else in the Home Counties. In autumn, the copper and gold of the beech canopy transforms family portraits. In winter, the bare twisted branches against winter sky provide a completely different but equally striking character. In spring, the fresh green of unfolding beech leaves is delicate and luminous.
Stowe National Trust garden near Buckingham is one of England's greatest landscape gardens — 18th-century English garden design at its most confident and ambitious, with temples, monuments, lakes, and woodland arranged across 250 hectares of designed landscape. The Corinthian Arch, the Temple of Concord and Victory, and the Palladian Bridge over the Octagonal Lake are among the specific portrait settings within the garden. The formal grass rides photographed at low angles create strongly geometric backgrounds that work particularly well for families with young children.
The chalk escarpment above Princes Risborough and Wendover — accessible from the Ridgeway National Trail and the Chiltern Way — provides open-sky portraits with panoramic views south across the Vale of Aylesbury. These locations work particularly well in summer evenings and autumn mornings, when the low-angle light on the downland grass creates a warm, soft-focus background. Coombe Hill, with its Boer War monument, is the most accessible escarpment viewpoint and provides the widest sky and longest view.
I recommend scheduling Chilterns family sessions in the 90 minutes before sunset in summer and autumn. This gives the best light on the beech canopy at Burnham Beeches and the warmest tones on the chalk grassland. In winter, midday light on clear days works well at the open escarpment locations. Spring bluebells appear in the Chiltern woods in late April and early May — a highly specific and beautiful window for woodland family portraits.
