The Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of County Clare in Ireland are among the most dramatic coastal landscapes in the British Isles — 8km of near-vertical limestone cliffs rising up to 214m above the Atlantic, with the Aran Islands visible across Galway Bay on clear days. For elopement photography, the combination of raw Atlantic cliff scenery, the constant movement of waves below, the broad Clare sky, and the wild grass and wildflower clifftop vegetation creates images of elemental power.
The Cliffs of Moher are accessed from the visitor centre at Liscannor Bay. The main path runs northward from the centre to O'Brien's Tower — a Victorian-era stone viewing tower at the highest point of the cliffs — and continues beyond on a less maintained clifftop path. The section north of O'Brien's Tower, beyond the main visitor area, has dramatically fewer people and the most photogenic cliff profile (the cliffs step down in layers from this direction, giving the full geological limestone strata visible).
The clifftop path south of the visitor centre, toward Hag's Head, passes through private farmland (access requires following the marked path) and reaches the most isolated sections of the clifftop — just grass, the cliff edge, the sea, and the sky. Morning visits before 9am and evening visits after 5pm see significantly fewer visitors than the midday peak.
Safety note: The cliff edge at the Cliffs of Moher is unfenced in many sections beyond the main visitor area. Photography requires appropriate attention to cliff edge distances. The cliffs are subject to rock fall and the path can be unstable in wet conditions. Keeping a significant margin from the edge is essential. The wind at the exposed clifftop can be very strong — secure all loose items.
The Burren — the extraordinary limestone pavement landscape immediately north of the Cliffs of Moher — contrasts completely with the drama of the cliffs. The Burren's exposed grey limestone pavement, covered in spring with rare wildflowers (gentians, orchids, bloody cranesbill) and dotted with megalithic tombs (Poulnabrone dolmen), creates a completely different elopement setting — ancient, silent, and geological rather than dynamic. The Poulnabrone Portal Tomb — a Neolithic dolmen standing on open limestone pavement — is one of the most powerful ceremony spaces in Ireland.
A two-location elopement session combining the Cliffs of Moher with the Burren produces photographs with completely different visual characters — the Atlantic drama of the cliffs and the ancient geological stillness of the Burren — that together create a comprehensive portrait of the west of Ireland.
The Cliffs of Moher and the Burren together form one of the most powerful elopement landscapes in the British Isles. I travel to Ireland for elopement sessions — both Clare and other Irish destinations. Enquire to discuss your Irish elopement plans.
