Devon has some of England's most varied and spectacular beaches — from the Victorian engineered bathing coves of Ilfracombe on the north coast to the wide Atlantic surf breaks of Saunton Sands, the sheltered Southern Hams coves around Bantham, and the unusual turquoise clarity of Blackpool Sands near Dartmouth. Each offers a different character for engagement and pre-wedding portrait sessions, and a photographer who knows Devon well will help you identify which beach fits your vision.
Saunton Sands on North Devon's Atlantic coast is one of England's finest beach photography settings — three miles of west-facing sand backed by the highest dune system in England, Braunton Burrows. The scale is genuinely epic: long exposures at low tide create sweeping wet-sand reflections of the sky, and the beach is wide enough that even in high summer you can find undisturbed sections for portrait work.
Sunset at Saunton faces almost directly into the Atlantic — the light is unobstructed from the west, meaning golden-hour photographs here have the clarity and depth that most English beaches only achieve in ideal conditions. This is worth planning around if you visit in June or July, when sunset falls at 9–9:30 pm.
Croyde Bay, a few miles north of Saunton, has a very different character — a small, enclosed surf bay with a more intimate feel and dramatic rocky headlands at each end. It's particularly good for smaller-scale portraits that use the rocks and foam for foreground interest.
Saunton timing tip
Low tide at Saunton creates an enormous expanse of wet sand that reflects the sky perfectly. Check tide tables before confirming your portrait time — you want to arrive 90 minutes before sunset on a falling tide for the longest stretch of reflective sand.
Tunnels Beaches is one of Devon's most photogenic and unusual venues — a series of Victorian tunnels carved through the cliff leading to private tidal rock pools and a small sheltered beach. The combination of rock-pool aquamarine, the Victorian bathing architecture, and the sheltered cove atmosphere creates portrait settings that are genuinely unlike anything else in England. The venue requires ticketed access but offers photography exclusivity that public beaches cannot provide.
Bantham Beach at the mouth of the Avon estuary in the South Hams is one of Devon's most beautiful — a south-facing beach with clear water, a view across to Burgh Island, and the wild estuary flow creating interesting compositions at the beach's eastern end. The contrast between the Atlantic openness of the beach and the enclosed wooded estuary behind creates natural scene variety within a small area.
Nearby Thurlestone (named for its characteristic rock arch), Beesands, and Torcross (on the Slapton Ley shingle ridge, a 3-mile barrier beach with a lagoon) all offer distinctive south Devon beach settings within 20 minutes of each other.
Blackpool Sands near Dartmouth is private and clean — a sheltered south-facing cove with unusually clear, turquoise-tinted water for England, surrounded by steep wooded hills of Monterey pines. The clarity and colour of the water here, combined with the bowl-shaped shelter, produces Mediterranean-quality images on sunny summer days. The south-facing orientation means the beach has sun all day in summer, with warm afternoon light on the sand.
| Beach | Orientation | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Saunton Sands | West-facing Atlantic | Sunset portraits, wide sand reflections, epic scale |
| Tunnels Beaches | Sheltered north-facing | Intimate, Victorian rock pools, all-day soft light |
| Bantham | South-facing estuary mouth | Burgh Island backdrop, estuary contrast, autumn colour |
| Blackpool Sands | South-facing sheltered cove | Clear turquoise water, Mediterranean feel, summer heat |
