Epping Forest is one of England's most ancient, most ecologically rich, and most photogenic woodlands — 6,000 acres of ancient pollarded hornbeam and beech, stretching from the east end of London into Essex, managed as a Royal Forest for over a thousand years and today administered by the City of London Corporation as open public land. For engagement, family, and portrait photography its combination of ancient woodland character, accessibility, and seasonal variety is unmatched within easy reach of London.
The photographic quality of Epping Forest derives from a specific quality of its ancient pollarded trees. Pollarding — the practice of cutting trees at head height to promote regrowth, practised here for centuries to produce charcoal and small timber — creates the characteristic Epping form: massive, gnarled, and multiple-stemmed trunks rising to a high canopy. These trees are hundreds of years old; their character is irreplaceable by any managed or planted woodland. The twisted hornbeam trunks, the multi-stemmed beech stools, and the moss-covered ground between them create portrait settings with genuine ancient woodland character.
High Beach & Viewpoint
The ridge-top clearing at High Beach gives the only significant open view in the forest — looking south over the Essex plain toward London. The ancient pollarded hornbeam trees immediately around the clearing, the valley below with its mixed woodland, and the ridge path running east create an excellent start point for a forest portrait walk. The Epping Forest Conservation Centre is based here with a large free car park.
Connaught Water
A large ornamental lake at the forest's south-western edge near Chingford — still water producing reflections, wildfowl, and open lakeside space surrounding it. The lakeside path offers waterside portrait positions with the ancient trees behind; the morning mist off the water in autumn (September–November) is one of the most atmospheric portrait conditions available anywhere within 20 minutes of central London.
Loughton Camp
An Iron Age hill fort at the heart of the forest — raised earthwork banks enclosing an area of particularly mature and ancient beech trees. The combination of historical resonance and the quality of the ancient multi-stemmed beech within the camp makes this one of the most productive portrait locations in the forest.
Theydon Bois Plain
A large open plain at the eastern edge of the forest, fringed with the characteristic pollarded hornbeam and with views across the Essex countryside. The combination of open sky, grass plain, and woodland edge gives the widest compositional variety in the forest for portrait photography.
Bluebell Season (April–May)
Epping Forest has exceptional bluebell carpets in April and May — the combination of the ancient pollarded canopy, the blue of the ground flora, and the green of new leaf is one of the most-photographed woodland conditions in England. The western slopes north of Chingford Plain are particularly productive.
Epping Forest is productive across all four seasons with distinct photographic qualities each offers:
The forest's ancient woodland character is at its most photographic in autumn and winter — when the bare pollarded form is fully visible and the low winter light creates dramatic shadows across the mossy ground between trunk bases.

I photograph engagement and family sessions in Epping Forest and across Essex — ancient woodland sessions that produce photography with genuine character.
