Surrey is one of the most underestimated counties in England for natural beauty. It is largely green belt — protected from the development that surrounds it on all sides — and the North Downs, the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the estates scattered across the county provide consistently beautiful outdoor portrait environments for families who live in commuter town Surrey or visit for the day.
Box Hill — famous from the Tour de France and the Jane Austen novels it inspired — provides chalk downland with panoramic views across the Surrey Weald. The combination of open hilltop grassland, box and yew woodland, and the River Mole stepping stones below creates remarkable variety within a single accessible location. Family sessions in late afternoon on Box Hill's south-facing slopes produce warm-lit, open-sky portraits with a distant view of the Weald that places the images firmly in southern England.
Surrey's ancient woodland produces reliable bluebell carpets in mid-April to mid-May — two to three weeks of extraordinary colour that pulls family photographers to specific woods year after year. Leith Hill — the highest point in South East England outside the South Downs — has woodland approaches through good bluebell country. Abinger Roughs, managed by the National Trust, is a quieter alternative. Timing is critical: bluebells peak for only a short window and vary year to year with temperature. Track local bluebell reports and book or rebook your session around the peak period.
Surrey has a high concentration of country estate and garden locations for more formal family portraits. Virginia Water — the ornamental lake in Windsor Great Park on the Surrey border — is accessible without charge and provides lakeside, archaeological ruins, and formal garden elements. Painshill Park near Cobham is a lesser-known 18th-century designed landscape with lake, grotto, cedar of Lebanon, and vineyard — architecturally extraordinary if less frequented than equivalent Kent or Oxfordshire alternatives.
For North Surrey families, Richmond Park and Bushy Park along the London border provide deer, ancient oaks, and managed parkland. These borderline Surrey/London locations are the closest equivalent to a true country setting within easy reach of the London commuter belt.
