Fowey and Mevagissey are two of south Cornwall's most beautiful and historically layered fishing villages — each offering a completely different atmosphere for wedding photography. Fowey is romantic and literary, a deep wooded estuary town where Daphne du Maurier set much of her fiction and where the ferry crossing to Polruan feels like a journey through time. Mevagissey is the more visually compact of the two — a double harbour of lime-washed cottages, lobster pots, and working fishing boats that seems to have been arranged specifically to be photographed.
Fowey (pronounced "Foy") sits at the mouth of the River Fowey — a deep, wooded estuary that feels theatrically beautiful at every turn. The town climbs steeply from the water's edge, with narrow streets, medieval St Fimbarrus Church, and the ruins of St Catherine's Castle on the headland providing a historic skyline. Readymoney Cove, just south of the town centre, offers a small sandy beach with views back to Fowey that make excellent engagement and post-ceremony portrait settings.
The Fowey Hotel's terrace and the harbour wall walk near the Fowey River Hotel provide elevated vantage points over the estuary. The ferry crossing to Polruan — a five-minute journey on a small passenger boat — opens up additional portrait angles from the opposite bank, looking back at Fowey with the town terraced against the hillside.
Fowey light and timing
Fowey's west-facing estuary catches beautiful late afternoon light in summer. The golden hour from 6–8 pm (June–August) illuminates the white-painted cottages on the Polruan side with warm reflected light across the water. Position portraits on the Fowey quayside during this window for images that capitalise on the estuary's natural reflections.
Mevagissey's defining feature is its double harbour — an inner harbour and outer harbour separated by a stone pier, packed with coloured fishing boats and creel stacks. The village climbs from the harbourside in terraces of white-painted and natural-stone cottages, and the narrow lanes between them provide intimate portrait settings that feel entirely removed from the bustle of more commercial Cornish resorts.
Mevagissey is compact, which makes it ideal for creating coherent portrait series in a limited time — everything significant is within a five-minute walk. The harbour wall at high tide, when the boats sit high above the quayside, creates dramatically different images from low tide, when the boats rest on sand and the full scale of the working harbour becomes visible.
The immediate surroundings of both villages have excellent wedding venue options:
South Cornwall's coastal landscape connects Fowey and Mevagissey with Polperro, Looe, and the Rame Peninsula (home to Polhawn Fort) to the east, and with the extraordinary gardens and coves around Helford to the west. Couples planning a south Cornwall wedding weekend often incorporate portrait sessions at both a fishing village and a coastal landscape location within the same day.
