The most popular portrait sessions are those conducted immediately before or after the ceremony in the streets and courts around the Senate House — when the robes are on, the light is good, and the atmosphere of achievement is present. These sessions typically run 45 to 60 minutes and cover the Senate House area, nearby college architecture, and any specific locations of personal significance.

I recommend booking as soon as your graduation ceremony date is confirmed. Summer graduation season in June and July is my busiest period, and popular time slots fill quickly. Extended family group sessions — which require careful coordination around the ceremony schedule — require the most advance planning.

Robes, Hoods, and the Gown Question

Cambridge academic robes are rented from Ryder & Amies or Ede & Ravenscroft and returned the same day in most cases. Ensure your gown and hood rental is confirmed before your photography session and allow time to dress properly before your photography appointment begins — badly fitted or accessorised gowns are one of the most common things that affect graduation portrait results and the one thing that can't be fixed in post-production.

Modern Cambridge graduates tend to wear the gown throughout the day, removing it for post-ceremony family celebrations. I'll photograph in robes and without robes in the same session so you have both formal and informal options.
