The Isle of Skye off the north-west coast of Scotland is the most spectacular island in the British Isles for landscape photography — a concentrated environment of jagged basalt mountains (the Cuillin ridge), sea lochs, waterfalls, fairy pools, ancient clan castles, and the extraordinary geological formations of the Trotternish Peninsula. The island has become the pre-eminent destination for elopement photography in the UK, attracting couples from across Britain and internationally who want a wild, elemental, dramatic wedding landscape.
Skye weather: The Isle of Skye has an extreme Atlantic climate — very high rainfall (approximately 1,800mm per year at the Cuillins), frequent mist and low cloud, and wind. The weather can change from bright sunshine to heavy rain and back multiple times in a single hour. Elopement photography on Skye requires full flexibility and warm, waterproof clothing. The dramatic mist and cloud conditions that characterise Skye produce extraordinary photography that sunny days on the island cannot — the mist between the peaks and the rain-slicked rocks are as much a part of Skye's character as the clear days.
Skye is connected to the mainland by the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh (no toll). The drive from Inverness takes 2.5 hours; from Fort William, 2 hours. Inverness has direct flights from London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, and other UK airports. The Caledonian Sleeper train from London Euston to Fort William (overnight, 13 hours) is a scenic and romantic way to arrive for a Skye elopement.
Skye elopements typically cover 3–4 locations over 6–8 hours, dependent on weather and season. The island's dramatic landscape demands a flexible approach and a willingness to work with whatever conditions the Hebridean climate provides — which almost always results in more powerful images than perfect weather. I travel to Skye for elopement sessions throughout the year.
