Jesus College occupies one of the most striking and unusual sites in Cambridge — a converted Benedictine nunnery whose medieval buildings, red brick cloister courts, and extensive gardens stand on a uniquely large plot of land north of the town centre. The college has an architectural character quite different from the classical stone colleges on the Backs — warm brick, medieval arches, a cloister, and gardens spacious enough to feel genuinely rural.
The approach to Jesus College is through a narrow medieval gatehouse passage known as "the Chimney" — an elongated, stone-vaulted tunnel between high college walls, opening suddenly into First Court. This transition from narrow outside world to spacious inner court is one of the finest entrance sequences in Cambridge and makes a superb photographic location: the couple silhouetted in the Chimney arch, or emerging from it into the light of First Court.
Jesus College contains the only surviving medieval cloister in Cambridge — the original cloister of the nunnery of St Radegund, founded in the 12th century. This is a low, arched colonnade of ancient stone surrounding a compact garden garth. The cloister is not large but it is architecturally extraordinary — ancient, intimate, and unlike anything else in Cambridge. Wedding portraits in a medieval cloister have a quality that is more Italian or monastic than typical English college.
The chapel at Jesus is the old priory church — substantially Norman and early English Gothic in structure, with Edward Burne-Jones Pre-Raphaelite stained glass (added 1873–77), ceiling paintings by William Morris, and Arts and Crafts decorations throughout. The interior combination of medieval form with Victorian Pre-Raphaelite art is unique in Cambridge and creates a richly coloured and atmospheric interior for ceremony photography.
First Court is surrounded by warm red brick buildings of the 16th and later centuries — the reddest and most brick-dominated court in Cambridge, quite different from the pale limestone or flint-and-stone textures of other colleges.
Jesus College has a large cricket ground within the college grounds — one of the few colleges with essentially a private park. The view across the open cricket ground to the college buildings is a genuinely unusual and spacious Cambridge portrait setting. The combination of college architecture, open sky, and maintained grass on a summer evening is strikingly English and photogenic.
Notable Jesus Alumni: Samuel Taylor Coleridge (though he left without graduating), Thomas Cranmer (the first Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury), Nick Clegg, Alistair Darling, and many others. The college's history as a converted nunnery gives it a distinctive founding narrative different from most Cambridge colleges.
Jesus College's combination of the medieval cloister, Pre-Raphaelite chapel, red brick courts, and spacious grounds makes it one of the most architecturally distinctive wedding settings in Cambridge. I photograph weddings across all Cambridge colleges.
