Lake Como has been the destination of choice for European aristocracy, artists, and romantics for 200 years — and it has completely justified that reputation. The deep glacial lake set between Alpine foothills produces an exceptional microclimate (lemon trees grow outdoors; magnolias reach 15 metres) and the accumulated centuries of villa building have given Como an unparalleled concentration of elegant garden estates. For a wedding with Italian villa grandeur, the lake is simply incomparable.
The photographic qualities of Lake Como are specific: the mountains rising directly from the water on both sides compress the view so that the entire landscape — water, mountains, sky, and villa gardens — fits within a single photograph. The scale that would be merely large elsewhere becomes intimate at Como because the mountains frame it. The quality of light on the water varies from glassy silver morning reflections to blazing late-afternoon gold, and the villa gardens — many containing species that flower continuously from April to October — provide constant photography in the foreground.
Villa del Balbianello occupies a wooded promontory jutting into the lake at the western arm near Lenno — one of the most dramatically positioned villa sites in the world. The villa itself is modest; what makes it extraordinary is the terraced gardens dropping to the water on three sides, the loggia with its lake-view arches that featured in Star Wars: Episode II and Casino Royale, and the combination of wisteria-draped balustrades with pure water and Alpine sky.
Balbianello Access Note: Villa del Balbianello is a FAI (Italian National Trust) property with strictly controlled access. Weddings and official photography sessions require advance booking and fees through the FAI. The only access to the villa is by boat from Lenno dock — no road access. Popular dates book 12–18 months in advance.
Bellagio sits at the exact apex of the Y-shaped lake, with views both arms of Como and the Lecco arm from its elevated position. The town itself — medieval steep lanes, wisteria-draped walls, restaurant terraces hanging over the water — is one of the most attractive small towns in Europe. The Villa Melzi gardens (open to the public) on the lake shore below the town have 19th-century English landscape elements, Japanese-influenced plantings, and camellias and azaleas that flower from early April.
On the east shore of the lake, Varenna is smaller and less visited than Bellagio, with a quality of light in the morning that is exceptional — the village faces west over the main lake, so it catches direct sun from about 10 am and is lit in full gold from mid-afternoon. The castle ruins above Varenna, the Villa Monastero (a Cistercian monastery converted to a lakeside garden and hotel), and the narrow village lanes are all photogenic wedding session locations.
I travel to Lake Como for weddings and elopements. Whether you are planning a full wedding at Villa del Balbianello or a private elopement in Bellagio or Varenna, I can discuss the photography, timing, and what is realistically possible for your visit.
