Long-distance relationships shift the value of in-person time in a way that couples who live together rarely fully understand. When you see each other every weekend — or less — the quality and documentation of that time becomes significantly more important. The reunion, however familiar the feeling, carries a weight that ordinary togetherness doesn't. And the separation that follows is easier when what ended is well-documented: photographs of where you were, how you were, the specific version of the two of you that existed in that particular visit.
Long-distance couples commissioning photography during reunions are, in my experience, among the most motivated and emotionally engaged portrait clients. They know what they want from the session and why it matters, which produces genuinely excellent photographs — people who understand why they're in front of a camera tend to bring an authenticity to the work that more casual portrait clients rarely match.
Reunion photoshoot sessions should feel like a good addition to your time together rather than a disruption of it. I design sessions to be efficient — 60 to 90 minutes in one or two locations — so that they sit comfortably within a weekend visit without consuming it. The session is also an activity in itself: something to do together that's more interesting and more memorable than the default activities of a short visit, and that ends with photographs you'll keep for years.
Location choices can be anything that's meaningful to this relationship: the city where one of you lives, the place you always go when you're together, a location that means something to your particular story. Or I can suggest Cambridge settings that work consistently well for couples photography — the riverside, the college Backs, Grantchester.
Long-distance couples often use photographs differently from couples who live together. Having a well-photographed visit to look back at — images that capture how you are together, what the other person looks like when they're relaxed, the specific geography of where you spent that weekend — serves a particular emotional function during the separation that follows. It's not a substitute for presence; it's a form of presence, available when the actual person isn't.
This isn't sentimental — it's practical. The best photographs of a relationship are made when the relationship is present and alive, not reconstructed later. Commission the session during the reunion when the material is right there.
Booking logistics for long-distance couples who need to coordinate between two places require a little more forward planning than local bookings. I ask for at least three weeks' notice to confirm session dates, and earlier for busy spring and summer periods. Weekends throughout the year are usually available unless very late booking. Contact me as soon as a visit is confirmed and we'll work around your travel plans.
