Positano is the most vertically dramatic village on the Amalfi Coast — a dense stack of terracotta, pink, and ochre buildings tumbling down a steep cliffside to a small pebble beach. For wedding photography, it is almost absurdly beautiful: every angle reveals another layered composition of coloured houses, bougainvillea, lemon trees, the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea, and on clear days, the island of Capri floating on the horizon.

The Vertical Village — Photography Locations

Positano has no flat ground. The entire town is built on terraces linked by staircases, steep lanes, and vaulted passageways. For wedding photography, this means every location has a dramatic vertical element — buildings and terraces layered behind and below a couple, the sea glittering in the background. Key photography locations include:

• ◆Via Positanesi d'America: The main descending staircase path through the centre of the village, flanked by bougainvillea-covered walls and passing beneath archways. At its best in the early morning before tourist traffic begins.
• ◆Spiaggia Grande (the main beach): The beach gives wide reverse angles on the village — the stacked coloured buildings rising above the couple are the defining Positano composition. Best in the late afternoon when the western light warms the cliffside facades.
• ◆Church of Santa Maria Assunta: The church's majolica-tiled Byzantine dome (blue, green, and yellow geometric tiles) is the visual centrepiece of Positano. The piazza below it and the terrace of the church provide ceremony and portrait spaces.
• ◆Hotel terraces and villa gardens: Many of Positano's hotels — Le Sirenuse, Il San Pietro, Villa Treville — have terraces with full sea views. Couples staying or celebrating at these venues have access to some of the most photographically spectacular private spaces on the coast.
• ◆Laurito beach (La Porta restaurant): A 10-minute water taxi from Positano, Laurito is a small coved beach accessible only by boat. Entirely different in character — intimate, isolated, and possible to have largely to yourselves outside peak season.

Bougainvillea and the Amalfi Coast Palette

The defining colour of Positano in summer is magenta — the deep fuchsia of bougainvillea cascading from walls, over archways, and along terraced balconies. Against the turquoise sea and the pale coloured stucco facades, bougainvillea creates an intensely saturated backdrop that makes portrait colours vivid and memorable. Peak bougainvillea bloom is May through October.

The lemon groves that terrace the hillsides above the village offer a different palette — deep shade canopy, large textured green leaves, glimpses of yellow fruit, and the brilliant sea visible through gaps in the foliage. These groves are used for intimate portrait sequences with dappled light.

Legal Requirements for Weddings in Positano

Marriages in Italy for foreign nationals require engagement of a local Italian wedding planner or coordinator with expertise in civil or symbolic ceremonies. A legal civil ceremony in Italy requires documents translated and apostilled according to Italian requirements, which should be arranged many months in advance. Many international couples choose a symbolic ceremony in Positano — a ceremony that is personally meaningful but not legally registered in Italy — combined with a legal register office marriage in their home country.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta requires Catholic documentation for a religious ceremony. Civil ceremonies can be conducted at the town hall (Comune) in Positano by arrangement with the local municipality.

Arriving in Positano

Positano is accessed from Naples (approximately 1.5 hours by road via the SS163 Amalfi Coast road or ferry from Mergellina or Molo Beverello) or from Rome (approximately 3 hours by road or rail to Salerno then ferry). The village itself is entirely pedestrian from the lower sections — traffic only reaches the upper road. Luggage and equipment reach the hotels by porter or small electric vehicle on the narrow lanes.
