Provence lavender fields are one of the most powerful and immediately recognisable landscape backdrops in all of European photography. The rows of purple lavender converging to the horizon, the stone farmhouse or mas in the background, and the piercing Provençal summer light create images of singular beauty. The lavender season is brief — typically three to four weeks in July — which makes lavender wedding and elopement photography a seasonal event that requires planning and flexible dates.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) in Provence typically blooms from late June through to mid-July in the Valensole Plateau and Luberon, and slightly later (mid-July to early August) at higher altitudes in the Verdon Gorge area and around Sault. The exact season varies by 7–10 days depending on the year's winter and spring temperatures. Harvest (when the fields are cut) begins from around 15 July in the lower areas and extends to early August at altitude.
Photographing in lavender fields requires specific light conditions to capture the colour at its best. The purple-blue of lavender under harsh midday sun becomes flat and washed out — the colour saturation is highest in the soft light of early morning (within the first two hours after sunrise) and in the golden hour before sunset. Overcast light produces well-saturated but soft, mood-driven lavender photography. The combination of a warm stone farmhouse or abbey wall in the background with the cool purple of the lavender in the foreground is at its most vivid in the slanted light of morning and evening.
Practical note: Access to lavender fields on French farms requires permission from the landowner — the fields are someone's crop, not a public garden. Many Valensole Plateau farmers have fenced areas and charge a small entry fee for photography access. Driving down a row of lavender or picking without permission is explicitly prohibited and damages the crop. Enquire with the property in advance for a dawn access session.
The lavender photography works best combined with Provence's distinctive hillside villages for variety across a two-day session: Gordes (the most spectacular of the Luberon's perched stone villages), Roussillon (a village built of red ochre stone in a cliff of red ochre quarry), Les Baux-de-Provence (a ruined medieval fortress on a limestone ridge), and the market towns of Apt and Forcalquier. The pale limestone and terracotta architecture against lavender purple is a complementary colour palette that makes Provence wedding photography distinctive.
Lavender season photography in Provence requires advance planning — the season is short and the best dates have high demand. I travel to Provence in July for lavender elopement sessions and destination weddings. Enquire well in advance for July bookings.
