Ravello is the elevated crown of the Amalfi Coast — a medieval hilltop town perched 350 metres above the sea on a terraced promontory between two valleys. It was here that Richard Wagner composed Parsifal while staying at what is now Villa Rufolo, that Virginia Woolf wrote letters calling it the most beautiful place in the world, and that every generation of European artists and writers has come in pilgrimage. For wedding photography, Ravello is simply extraordinary.
The Amalfi Coast has many beautiful settings, but Ravello's elevation changes everything. Rather than standing on a beach looking at water, in Ravello you stand among medieval towers, garden terraces, and ancient balustrades looking downover the Tyrrhenian Sea from 350 metres above it. The visual depth — hills, coastal towns, open water, horizon — is unlike any other wedding backdrop in Italy.
Villa Cimbrone is Ravello's most famous estate, now an exclusive five-star hotel that hosts an extremely limited number of private events. The villa was redesigned in the early 20th century by Lord Grimthorpe (the English eccentric who also redesigned St Albans Cathedral), who planted a kilometre-long garden walk through woodland and terraced gardens.
At the furthest point from the villa, the garden terminates at the Belvedere of Infinity — a balustraded terrace with ancient stone busts of Greek and Roman figures, and a perfectly unobstructed 180° view over the Tyrrhenian Sea from 350 metres above it. The views extend from Capri in the south to the Sorrento Peninsula and on clear days to the shadow of Sicily. This is one of the most famous views in Europe, and one of the most beautiful wedding ceremony locations in the world.
Villa Rufolo is older — medieval Moorish, built for the wealthy Rufolo family by Arab-Norman craftsmen in the 13th century. The tower, the Moorish cloister with its double-colonnaded arcades, and the terrace gardens overlooking the coast are among the most atmospheric medieval gardens in southern Europe. Wagner stayed here in 1880 and declared it the inspiration for the Garden of Klingsor in Parsifal. The gardens host the annual Ravello Festival each summer. Weddings at Villa Rufolo work within this operatic, intensely atmospheric medieval setting.
The town of Ravello itself — Piazza Duomo with its 11th-century cathedral, the narrow lanes, the stone stairways between shaded terraces, the archways with sea views framed between ancient buildings — provides exceptional pre- and post-ceremony portrait locations. Walking through Ravello after a ceremony naturally generates dozens of photographs with extraordinary backdrops.
Best Time of Year in Ravello: May, June, and September offer the best combination of weather, light, and manageable crowds. July and August are peak tourist season — beautiful weather but Villa Cimbrone and Rufolo are very busy during the day. Early morning in July (7–9 am) or late evening (6–8 pm) photography at these gardens avoids the bulk of visitors.
I travel internationally for destination weddings and have experience photographing in Italy. If you are planning a wedding or elopement in Ravello, Villa Cimbrone, or elsewhere on the Amalfi Coast, I would love to discuss the photography with you.
