The Surrey Hills AONB — the Greensand Ridge, Box Hill, the Tillingbourne Valley — sits thirty miles south of central London and feels about three hundred years away. Green lanes, old farms, working countryside, and the particular quality of the North Downs light in summer: it is one of the most beautiful landscapes in southern England.
Charlotte and Oliver married at a country house hotel on the edge of the hills above Dorking. The house dates from the 17th century, extended and restored in the Victorian era, and it commands views across the Weald towards the South Downs thirty miles further south. On a clear September day, those views from the terrace are extraordinary.
September in Surrey is, for wedding photographers, the best month. The summer heat has broken. The quality of light is warmer and more directional than August's harsh overhead sun. The trees are still full but the first hints of autumn colour are beginning — bronze and amber at the edges of the oak leaves. For portrait photography, September light in the Surrey Hills is as good as it gets in southern England.
The ceremony was held in the house's licensed ceremony room — oak panelling, tall sash windows facing south, a fireplace. Forty guests. Charlotte's dress — a simple silk gown with a long train — read beautifully against the historic interior.
After the ceremony, the party moved to the terrace and the walled garden for portraits. The walled garden — mellow brick, the last roses of summer, a sundial at the centre — is one of those locations that works in almost any light. The couple portraits here were among the best of the year.
The terrace views — the Weald spread below the hillside, trees and fields to the horizon — demanded an establishing shot: the couple on the terrace with the landscape behind them. At 70mm the perspective compression brought the hills visually closer. At 200mm the landscape appeared to engulf the frame. Both versions work; together they tell the story of where this wedding was.
