Santorini is one of the world's most photographed places — and for good reason. The iconic white-domed churches of Oia, the cobalt blue of the Aegean Sea, volcanic black sand beaches, and sunsets that turn the sky into a palette of deep oranges, pinks, and purples. For a destination wedding or elopement, Santorini creates images of extraordinary beauty and romance.
Santorini's west-facing caldera clifftop means the sunset is genuinely spectacular — and completely different from sunsets almost anywhere else in the world, because the caldera amplifies and reflects the light. The sky turns deep amber, orange, and pink against the white architecture and the deep blue sea.
For wedding photography, the golden hour in Santorini is extraordinary — perhaps the most beautiful sunset light I have worked in. Portrait sessions from about 6pm onwards in summer are magical. The Oia sunset is world-famous for a reason, but also extremely crowded — the slightly elevated positions above Oia town, or the Imerovigli area, give equally spectacular views with fewer people.
💡 Avoiding the crowds: Santorini is extremely busy in July and August — Oia in particular is overwhelmed with visitors at sunset. I recommend shoulder season (May–June or September–October) for the best photography conditions: beautiful light, comfortable temperatures, and manageable crowds.
Santorini is one of the most popular elopement destinations for UK couples. The intimate, personal nature of an elopement is perfectly suited to the narrow lanes, private terraces, and caldera-edge viewpoints of the island. Many couples opt for a symbolic photographer-witnessed ceremony at a dramatic location, combined with their legal ceremony at home.
For legally recognised ceremonies in Greece, you will need specific documentation — I recommend consulting a local wedding planner who specialises in helping international couples navigate the Greek legal process.
May and June are ideal — the island is green and flowering, temperatures are warm but not overwhelming, and the tourist season hasn't yet peaked. The light in June is particularly good.
September and October are equally good — the sea is at its warmest (from the summer heat), crowds are smaller, and the lower sun angle creates even more beautiful photographic light.
