Split is one of the most extraordinary city photography locations in Europe — a living city built inside a Roman emperor's retirement palace. Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is not a museum but a living neighbourhood where restaurants, apartments, churches, and bars occupy the ancient Roman structures directly. For destination elopement and wedding photography, Split offers a visual depth that few other Mediterranean cities can match.
Built between 295 and 305 AD, Diocletian's Palace occupies the eastern half of Split's historic centre. The palace walls, towers, and gates still stand. Inside, the network of narrow alleyways (sometimes barely a metre wide) lined with medieval and Renaissance buildings layered over Roman foundations creates a photography environment without parallel. The Peristyle — the Roman ceremonial courtyard — is surrounded by columns and faces the Cathedral of Saint Domnius (a former Roman mausoleum). Stone, history, and daily life coexist in a density that is rarely experienced elsewhere.
Split is the natural base for a Dalmatian Coast trip — the ferry and catamaran hub for Hvar, Brač, Vis, Šolta, and other islands. A combined Split city session and Hvar island session in a 3–4 day trip gives a complete range: Roman urban architecture, Dalmatian island natural beauty, and potentially Krka waterfalls or Plitvice Lakes if extending the trip inland. Split airport (Split Resnik) has direct flights from London in summer.
I travel to Split and the Dalmatian Coast for destination elopements, engagement sessions, and wedding photography. Sessions typically include the palace interior at dawn and one coastal or island location. Get in touch to plan your session.
