Best photography locations in the Surrey hills

The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretches across 422 square kilometres of chalk downland, ancient woodland, and river valleys south of London. Within the M25 ring of one of the world's most urban environments, it offers portrait and engagement photography locations of extraordinary quality. Here are the best.

Box Hill

Box Hill is the most iconic viewpoint in the Surrey Hills — a steep chalk promontory above the River Mole valley offering a 180-degree view across the Weald towards the South Downs. The mixed chalk grassland and ancient box woodland create multiple distinct environments within a short walk. The viewpoint itself is best at sunrise and golden hour evening. The North Downs Way path provides atmospheric walking portrait opportunities through ancient yew and box trees.

Leith Hill

At 294 metres, Leith Hill is the highest point in south-east England. The summit tower offers a 360-degree panorama including, on clear days, the English Channel and central London simultaneously. The surrounding woodland — particularly in autumn — is deeply atmospheric. The rhododendron woodland in May provides extraordinary colour. Leith Hill is slightly less visited than Box Hill, making it better for unhurried portrait sessions.

Newlands Corner

A wide chalk downland ridge above Guildford with wide-open sky views across to Hindhead and the North Downs. Particularly beautiful at sunset facing west. The open landscape is excellent for engagement portraits where sky and landscape are as important as the subjects. The ancient sunken lane leading from Newlands Corner down through the ridge is a favourite atmospheric setting for walking portraits.

Ranmore Common

Ranmore Common sits above Dorking between Box Hill and Leith Hill — ancient oakwood, extensive bracken flats, and long views from the ridge. Spring is exceptional here: bluebells carpet the woodland floor in April and May, making it one of the best bluebell photography locations in Surrey. The common is best in early morning, before walkers arrive in numbers.

Friday Street and the Tillingbourne Valley

Friday Street is a hamlet in a hidden valley below Leith Hill — an iron-age hammer pond surrounded by ancient woodland, accessible via steep woodland paths. Extremely photogenic in all seasons but particularly in autumn and bluebell season. The Tillingbourne stream runs through the valley floor, providing reflective water and gentle light in a completely sheltered setting.

Practical Advice for Surrey Hills Sessions

The Surrey Hills is accessible from London in 30–50 minutes by car. Parking is available at Box Hill, Leith Hill, and Newlands Corner but becomes crowded on fine weekends — arrive early or book a weekday session. The chalk landscape drains quickly after rain. Walking distances between shooting locations are typically 200–800 metres. Comfortable shoes are essential; heels are not.
