Cardiff has an exceptional range of outdoor settings for family photography — from sixty acres of Bute Park meadows and arboretum running through the heart of the city, to the Gothic castle in beech woodland at Castell Coch, to the wide coastal landscapes of the Vale of Glamorgan reaching down to the Bristol Channel. The city parks are some of the best-designed Victorian urban parks in Britain: Roath Park with its boating lake and rose gardens, Pontcanna Fields by the Taff — all within a few miles of the centre.
Family sessions in Cardiff are relaxed, outdoor, and led by your children. I follow rather than direct — the best family photographs happen when everyone is simply being themselves in a beautiful place.

Sixty acres of parkland and arboretum running from Cardiff Castle to the Taff — wide meadows, mature tree avenues, and the river bank.
Classic Victorian park with a boating lake, rose gardens, and long grass areas — popular and beautiful for afternoon light sessions.
Restored medieval village and lakeside landscape in the Vale of Glamorgan — wildflower meadows and wooded shoreline.
Fairytale Gothic Revival castle rising from beech woodland above the Taff — woodland tracks and riverside paths nearby.
Modern waterfront landscape with wide esplanade, water reflections, and industrial heritage backdrop.
Rolling farmland, coastal cliffs, and ancient hedgerow lanes between Cardiff and the Bristol Channel.
Bute Park is our most popular Cardiff location — it sits right next to the castle and has an extraordinary range of natural settings within a short walk, from riverside to open meadow to dense woodland. Roath Park is excellent for afternoon light. For something more dramatic, Castell Coch in the beech woods above Tongwynlais is extraordinary in autumn. Cosmeston Lakes is superb for families who want a more relaxed, natural countryside feel.
Cardiff has a mild Atlantic climate, which means grass is green and flowers are out from April through to November. Late spring (May–June) gives maximum wildflower interest. Golden hour in late summer and autumn (August–October) gives the warmest tones. Winter sessions with bare branches can be equally beautiful — the light is lower and softer.
I cover Cardiff and the surrounding area — Vale of Glamorgan, Penarth, Barry, Cowbridge, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Newport, and into the eastern Valleys. I also cover areas of the Brecon Beacons edge for sessions with a more dramatic Welsh landscape backdrop. Travel within 25 miles of Cardiff is included.
Let them run, explore, and ignore me for the first few minutes — it always works better. I never ask children to look at the camera or smile. The best family photographs happen when children are absorbed in something they enjoy, and parents can be present without performing. Bring a snack; it works wonders.
