The ideal time is 28–34 weeks of pregnancy — the bump is beautifully visible but you are still comfortable to walk and move freely. For Cardiff outdoor sessions, late spring (May–June) gives Bute Park at its lush best and Roath Park rose garden in bloom. Autumn (September–October) gives beautiful warm light and colour in the Bute Park woodland.

Bute Park is one of the finest urban park settings in Wales for maternity photography. The ancient parkland runs along the River Taff from Cardiff Castle to the north — massive specimen trees, open riverside meadows, formal garden areas, and the medieval castle walls as backdrop. The combination of city accessibility and genuine landscape quality makes it the natural first choice for most Cardiff maternity sessions.

Castell Coch is extraordinary. The Victorian Gothic Revival castle designed by William Burges rises from a wooded hillside north of Cardiff — red stone turrets and a fairy-tale silhouette above beech woodland. The approach path through the woodland is beautiful in spring and autumn, and the castle courtyard and exterior walls give a genuinely dramatic setting. It is unlike any other UK maternity photography location.
