Trentham Gardens south of the city — designed around a great lake in the Italian formal tradition — gives a backdrop of genuine grandeur, with rose gardens, long water features, and ancient woodland. To the north, Biddulph Grange (National Trust) is unlike anything else in England: a sequence of Victorian garden rooms in different historical styles, from Egyptian to Chinese.
