The majority of UK weddings are now civil or humanist ceremonies — the trend towards non-religious celebration has been consistent for decades and reflects the actual beliefs of the couples getting married. Civil and humanist ceremonies tend to be more personal, more directly expressive of the relationship, and more emotionally direct than religious ones, because everything said is chosen by the couple rather than prescribed by a tradition.

For photography, this usually means a ceremony that is more emotionally rich — more laughter, more genuine emotion, more moments where the specific relationship between these two people is directly articulated rather than submerged in liturgy.
