Natural wedding, family and portrait photography in Kendal — outdoor sessions at the castle, along the River Kent and across the beautiful South Lakeland countryside.
Book a SessionKendal — the 'Auld Grey Town', named for the grey limestone of its buildings — is Cumbria's southernmost significant town and the traditional gateway to the Lake District National Park. Known nationally for Kendal Mint Cake, it is nonetheless a proper market town with a handsome historic centre, a first-rate art gallery at Abbot Hall, a dramatic castle ruin and surprisingly good access to both the Lakes to the north and the Yorkshire Dales to the east. The combination of the castle viewpoint, the limestone river valley and the South Lakeland countryside gives Kendal an excellent range of portrait settings for all seasons.
South of Kendal, the Elizabethan countryside is exceptional: Sizergh Castle (National Trust), Levens Hall with its world-famous topiary garden and the gentle River Kent valley between limestone escarpments. I photograph families, couples, weddings and individuals in Kendal and across South Lakeland — Windermere, Ambleside, Milnthorpe and the broader Lake District and Cumbrian area. I travel across the north of England for weddings and portrait sessions throughout the year.

The dramatic 12th-century castle ruins on the hill east of the town — birthplace of Henry VIII's mother Catherine Parr — with panoramic views across Kendal, the Kent valley and the Lakeland fells rising to the north.
The River Kent flowing through the town with the beautiful Abbot Hall Park alongside — the 18th-century Abbot Hall (housing one of the north of England's finest art galleries) and the riverside gardens are outstanding family portrait settings.
The magnificent medieval peel tower and Elizabethan hall of Sizergh Castle, three miles south — the NT-managed estate with its rock garden, lake and formal gardens provides an outstanding wedding venue and portrait setting.
The extraordinary Levens Hall five miles south — the finest surviving Elizabethan topiary garden in the world, with 400-year-old yew and box trees clipped into fantastic shapes, alongside an Elizabethan hall open to visitors.
The beautiful valley of the River Kent south of Shap — Killington Lake reservoir, the limestone exposures of Underbarrow Scar and the typical South Lakeland hedgerow-and-pasture landscape stretching toward the Yorkshire Dales.
