Lavenham is Suffolk's most extraordinary village — a medieval wool town so intact it is used repeatedly as a film and television location. The Guildhall, the crooked Market Place buildings, Water Street and Church Street, and the great flint wool church create an atmosphere and visual character genuinely unlike anywhere else in England. It is — in a very precise sense — irreplaceable as a photography location.
I photograph portraits, couples, engagements, and families in Lavenham throughout the year, typically in early morning before the visitors arrive. The town in golden light, with empty streets and the bells of St Peter and St Paul in the distance, is one of the most beautiful portrait photography environments in East Anglia.

Lavenham's Guildhall — the extraordinary early-16th-century timber-framed building on the market place, one of the finest examples in England. The market square, the tilted frontages, and the cobbled surface combine to produce portrait backgrounds that exist nowhere else in Britain.
The lane running south from the market towards the church — a continuous spectacle of jetted, painted, and leaning medieval buildings, with an atmosphere of slow accumulated time that reads beautifully in photographs.
The great wool church that towers over the village — one of the grandest parish churches in England, its flint exterior, the porch, and the churchyard provide monumental, characterful portrait settings.
The deeply irregular buildings of Lavenham — the famous 'crooked house' and the wattle-and-daub frontages visible throughout the village create a fairy-tale quality in photographs unlike anywhere else in the country.
The historic Swan Hotel on High Street — a particularly atmospheric collection of medieval buildings that forms a coherent backdrop through the town, with a walled garden that is worth requesting access to for sessions.
The rolling Suffolk countryside around Lavenham — gentle arable hills, wide skies, and the bridleways that connect the village to Long Melford and the Stour valley. Extended sessions can include the open landscape as a contrasting backdrop.
FAQ
Lavenham is England's finest and most intact medieval wool town — the combination of the 15th and 16th-century timber-framed buildings, the extraordinary scale of the wool church, and the overall coherence of the streetscape is genuinely unmatched in Britain. There is no modern intervention: the buildings lean, tilt, and crowd in ways that create a quality of photograph impossible to replicate at a contemporary location. It is used as a film location precisely because it looks like no other town in England.
Lavenham is approximately 35 miles from Cambridge — about 45 minutes by road. I cover this area regularly and apply no travel supplement for Lavenham sessions.
Early morning — particularly between 7am and 9am — is exceptional in Lavenham. The town receives very few visitors before mid-morning, the light falls down the medieval street at a beautiful angle, and the atmosphere is entirely different from the busy afternoon. Late afternoon golden hour is also excellent. I strongly recommend avoiding midday sessions when the town is at peak visitor volume.
Lavenham is one of the best engagement photography locations in East Anglia — the backdrop is distinctive, the atmosphere is romantic, and the town provides such visual variety within a short walk that a 90-minute session covers an extraordinary range of images. It is also a wonderful location for couples who want something genuinely different from park grass and formal garden settings.
Yes — Lavenham works very well for family portrait sessions, particularly with older children and babies. The town is flat, accessible, and very compact so sessions stay focused. For families with toddlers, early morning sessions work particularly well when you have the streets to yourselves.
