Aldeburgh · Suffolk Heritage Coast

Aldeburgh is Suffolk's most celebrated small coastal town — the shingle beach, the working boats, the extraordinary 16th-century Moot Hall standing almost on the tideline, and the coloured Georgian and Victorian houses along the seafront compose a townscape unlike any other in England. It has drawn painters, musicians, writers, and photographers for generations, and the quality of the light on this stretch of coast — particularly in the long eastern evenings — is genuinely exceptional.
I photograph portrait sessions, couples, engagements, and families in Aldeburgh and along the Suffolk Heritage Coast throughout the year. Sessions here produce a quality of outdoor portrait that is entirely its own — coastal light, rough texture, working landscape — photographs that will be recognisably Aldeburgh decades from now.

Locations
The long shingle beach at Aldeburgh — the fishermen's huts and black-tarred boats pulled above the tideline, the Moot Hall rising from the beach, and the particularly beautiful Suffolk coastal light that falls warm and long in the early morning and evening.
Aldeburgh's iconic 16th-century Moot Hall on the beach — the red-brick and timber-framed building, now standing almost on the shoreline due to coastal erosion, is the most distinctive and atmospheric photography backdrop in the town.
The extraordinary Arts and Crafts fantasy village immediately to the north of Aldeburgh — the House in the Clouds, the Mere, the boathouse, and the distinctive vernacular architecture all produce photographs of a quality and character unlike anywhere else in Suffolk.
The converted Victorian maltings complex at Snape on the River Alde — home to the Aldeburgh Festival and one of the most architecturally distinctive music venues in England. The tidal reed beds, the riverside barns, and the extraordinary sky provide exceptional extended session locations.
The coastal path north from Aldeburgh to Sizewell and south towards Orford Ness — open heathland, the RSPB Minsmere reserve, coastal lagoons, and the particular quality of the light over the North Sea that has drawn artists to this stretch of coast for generations.
The medieval castle town of Orford to the south, and the extraordinary shingle spit of Orford Ness — one of the strangest and most photogenic landscapes in England, restricted access making it a genuinely rare photography location for those who plan ahead.
FAQ
Aldeburgh has a quality of light and a physical character — the shingle, the working fishing boats, the Moot Hall on the beach, Scallop on the foreshore, the coloured houses along Crag Path — that is simply not reproducible elsewhere. The town has attracted painters and photographers for a hundred years and the quality of the coastal light is genuinely exceptional, particularly in the long golden hour that Suffolk coastal evenings provide.
Aldeburgh is approximately 65 miles from Cambridge — about an hour by road. I photograph the Suffolk Heritage Coast regularly and travel to Aldeburgh and the surrounding coast is included in my standard packages.
I photograph portrait and couple sessions in and around Aldeburgh throughout the year, including during Festival periods. Event photography within the Festival itself is managed separately through the Aldeburgh Music organisation.
Yes — Aldeburgh is one of my favourite couple and engagement photography locations on the Suffolk coast. The shingle beach, the boats, the Moot Hall, and then Thorpeness village immediately to the north create a 90-minute session route that produces an extraordinary variety of photographs within a very compact geography.
Snape Maltings is excellent for extended sessions — the converted Victorian barns, the tidal river, the reed beds, and the remarkable quality of east Suffolk light over the Alde estuary produce a very different kind of photograph from the beach. I recommend combining an Aldeburgh beach session with a Snape element for the most interesting visual range.
