Holkham Beach on the North Norfolk coast is one of the most celebrated beaches in England — a vast expanse of white sand backed by a monumental Corsican pine forest, set within a National Nature Reserve, and blessed with a quality of light from the open North Sea that makes outdoor photography here unlike almost anywhere else in the country. It is where the final scene of Shakespeare in Love was filmed, and where photographers from across the UK bring their most important work.
I photograph couple sessions, engagements, elopements, and family sessions at Holkham throughout the year — preferring early morning and the autumn and winter months when the beach is at its most atmospheric and least crowded. The photographs possible at Holkham in October dawn light are genuinely extraordinary.

Locations
The broad white sand beach at Holkham before the car park opens — mile after mile of uncrowded beach, the North Sea light, and the dune system stretching to the horizon. Sunrise at Holkham is arguably the finest photography window on the North Norfolk coast.
The vast Corsican pine plantation that backs Holkham beach — its cathedral-like columns of straight timber, filtered light, and the deep green floor make it one of the most distinctive portrait environments anywhere in England. The forest is the frame.
The Holkham National Nature Reserve dune system — marram grass, the natural ridge between forest and beach, and the sense of wild landscape scale that very few English beaches can match.
The Palladian mansion of Holkham Hall set within parkland designed by William Kent — the estate grounds, the lake, and the park provide additional session locations for couples willing to plan ahead and liaise with estate management.
The wider North Norfolk AONB coast — Burnham Overy Staithe and its salt marshes, Wells-next-the-Sea harbour, Brancaster Bay, and the full sweep of coast westward towards Hunstanton. Extended elopement days can incorporate multiple locations.
The final hour before sunset at Holkham Beach — the North Sea light turns gold and then red, the beach empties, and the relationship between the sky, the sand, and the pines becomes genuinely extraordinary. This is the hour most couple photographs are taken.
FAQ
Holkham combines three genuinely exceptional elements that rarely coexist: a vast expanse of white sand beach broader and paler than anything else on the English coast, a monumental Corsican pine forest running directly to the beach edge, and the big Norfolk sky with the quality of light that comes from the open North Sea. This combination has made Holkham the filming location for the final scene of Shakespeare in Love, and one of the most photographed beaches in England. For couple, family, and elopement photography it is simply irreplaceable.
Yes — informal elopement ceremonies (not legally registered) can be held at Holkham Beach within the National Nature Reserve. For legally registered ceremonies, the nearest licensed outdoor ceremony venues are in Wells-next-the-Sea and at Holkham Hall — both within a few miles. I am very experienced in coordinating elopement days that incorporate a private ceremony, couple portraits, and a small celebration all within a few hours at this location.
Holkham is approximately 90 miles from Cambridge — about 1 hour 45 minutes by road. I photograph the North Norfolk coast regularly and travel to Holkham is included in my standard packages; for full-day elopements I may apply a nominal travel contribution depending on the package.
October through early April — when visitor numbers are low, the beach is quiet, and the light conditions are at their most dramatic. The beach in mist, or in the raking low winter sun, is extraordinary. May, June and September are also excellent if you target sunrise sessions before the car park opens. Summer high-season midday sessions at Holkham are the only time I discourage — the beach becomes very busy from 10am.
Yes — Holkham Beach is one of the best family photography locations in the whole of the East of England. The white sand, the shallow water, the dunes, and the forest all give children genuine freedom, and the photographs of children running, exploring, and playing at Holkham have a quality that city parks simply cannot produce.
