Bolton sits at the edge of two distinct landscapes: the industrial towns of Greater Manchester to the south, and the open West Pennine Moors to the north. For portraits, it is the moors that matter — Rivington Pike rising above a chain of reservoirs, the ancient woodland of Smithills Hall, and the dramatic fell country of Belmont and Entwistle. These are landscapes with real character: vast, unselfconscious, far from the expected.
I photograph outdoors and without direction, working with the natural light and movement of each location. Where do you recommend for portrait sessions near Bolton?+
Rivington Pike is the most dramatic Bolton location — the hilltop tower above Anglezarke Reservoir gives enormous moorland panoramas and the walk up provides wonderful natural interaction portraits. Smithills Hall works beautifully for something more refined, with the medieval hall exterior and its walled garden. Jumbles Country Park is excellent for woodland sessions, especially in autumn.
What is the best time of year for a West Pennine Moors portrait session?+
The moors are at their most beautiful from late July through October. Heather blooms purple across the fell tops in August and September; from October the bracken turns amber and gold. Morning light in summer and late afternoon in autumn give the most evocative quality on the open moors. Winter can be extraordinary too — low mist and silver light on the reservoirs.
Can we do a session at Rivington Pike?+
Yes — Rivington Pike is one of my favourite locations for Bolton portrait sessions. The walk up creates relaxed, natural portraits in motion; the views from the top are extraordinary. The Lever Park terraced gardens below are a beautiful additional element for Full and Extended sessions.
