Wedding Photographer Cheshire — Black-and-White Manors, Country House Hotels and the Cheshire Plain
Cheshire is one of the most distinctive wedding photography counties in England — a flat, fertile agricultural plain with a tradition of black-and-white timber-framed architecture unlike anything found elsewhere in the north of England. The great Cheshire manors — half-timbered, gabled and often moated — give the county a medieval character that coexists with a concentration of country house hotel wedding venues among the highest outside the Home Counties. As a Cheshire wedding photographer, I cover the county from the Peak District foothills in the east to the Wirral peninsula and the Welsh border in the west, including Chester’s historic city centre and the rural farmland of the mid-Cheshire ridge.
Cheshire’s Distinctive Wedding Architecture
The black-and-white timber-framed style — also called Magpie architecture in Cheshire — reaches its most elaborate expression in the farmhouses and halls of the mid-county plain. Chester’s city centre is a unique commercial streetscape in which medieval black-and-white buildings were extended and added to throughout the Victorian period — the Rows (elevated covered walkways unique to Chester) and the cathedral precinct provide wedding portrait locations unlike any other English city. Carden Park, Peckforton Castle and Nunsmere Hall represent the top country house wedding hotel tier in the county, all within easy reach of Manchester, Liverpool and the North West motorway network.
Chester and the Cheshire Countryside
Chester is one of England’s best-preserved Roman and medieval cities — its city walls are the most complete in Britain, and the Tudor cathedral and medieval guildhalls give it a visual texture excellent for documentary wedding photography. The surrounding Cheshire countryside — the Delamere Forest, the Sandstone Trail, the Bollin valley parklands — provides natural outdoor portrait locations within twenty minutes of any Cheshire venue. The Peak District begins its foothills at the eastern edge of the county and can be incorporated into an ambitious wedding day itinerary for particularly outdoor-focused couples.
