Non-Traditional Weddings
For brides who write their own rules. Documentary coverage for weddings that reject the script and celebrate in a way that's entirely, authentically yours.
Your Wedding, Your Rules
The anti-bride movement isn't about being against weddings — it's about being firmly for authenticity. It's the rejection of the elements of a wedding day that feel imposed, performative, or disconnected from who you actually are. The black dress instead of white. The pizza instead of the three-tier cake. The pub instead of the country house hotel. The playlist instead of the string quartet.
Anti-bride weddings tend to be smaller, more intimate, and more genuinely reflective of the couple at the centre of them. They're attended by people who were actually chosen rather than invited by convention. They eat food everyone actually wants and dance to music everyone knows. The result is a day that feels completely real — and photographs that reflect that reality with extraordinary clarity.
My documentary approach is exactly right for anti-bride weddings. I don't direct or pose. I stay present, watch carefully, and capture the day as it genuinely unfolds — the warmth, the laughter, the small moments of genuine connection between people who actually love each other.
Black wedding dress? Short dress? Jumpsuit? Your everyday outfit? The anti-bride movement is built on the idea that the outfit should reflect who you actually are — not what a wedding industry convention dictates. I photograph every choice with equal care.
No bouquet toss, no garter, no white cake, no 'something borrowed'. The anti-bride wedding is about keeping what's meaningful and dropping what isn't. I document exactly that — the parts that matter to you.
Pizza for the wedding breakfast. A bar you actually like. A playlist you made. Street food. Buffet. Whatever makes the reception feel like a party you'd actually want to be at — I'm there to document the joy of all of it.
The pub you met in. A restaurant that means something. A community space, a garden, an art gallery. Anti-bride venues are chosen for meaning and atmosphere, not for meeting a wedding venue checklist.
The anti-bride wedding tends to be more intimate — the people invited are genuinely the people who matter most. The warmth and closeness of that dynamic produces extraordinary photographs.
The anti-bride deserves anti-bride photography — natural, unstaged, documentary. No forced poses, no fake laughing at nothing, no standing in a row. Just the real day as it genuinely unfolds.

The anti-bride movement is a rejection of the prescriptive elements of traditional weddings that don't feel authentic to the couple. An anti-bride might wear black, choose a non-traditional venue, skip the bouquet toss, reject the white cake, have pizza for the wedding breakfast, or simply approach the day with an attitude of 'we'll do the parts that mean something to us and ignore the rest'. It's not anti-marriage — it's pro-authenticity.
Yes — and they're among the most joyful weddings I photograph, because the couples are always entirely themselves. When you've stripped away the elements you felt you 'should' include and kept only what's genuinely meaningful, the photographs are extraordinarily authentic.
Of course, and with great enthusiasm. Black wedding dresses are visually stunning and photographically extraordinary — the contrast, the drama, the statement. I treat black and dark wedding attire with the same careful attention as any other choice.
Not only okay — it's the starting point I prefer. A wedding without the scripted elements tends to have more genuine moments, more relaxed guests, and more honest emotional content. The photographs from an anti-tradition wedding are consistently more authentic than those from heavily choreographed ones.
Small, intimate anti-bride weddings often produce the most emotionally powerful photographs of all — the closeness and warmth of a small group of genuinely chosen people is palpable in the images. I work equally well with intimate gatherings of ten as with large celebrations of a hundred.
