There's a reason many photographers consider autumn their favourite season. The combination of rich copper and gold tones, soft directional light, and the cosy warmth of jumpers and wellies creates a particular magic that no other season quite replicates. If you've been thinking about family photographs, autumn is worth serious consideration.
The colours are extraordinary
Rich amber, copper, rust, and gold tones transform ordinary woodland into something spectacular. These warm colours also complement almost every skin tone and work beautifully with earthy, neutral clothing.
The light is softer and more directional
The lower sun angle in autumn (September–November) means golden-hour light that in summer only lasts 20 minutes can stretch for several hours. The same location at 3pm in September looks magical; at 3pm in July it's harsh midday light.
Children are generally more co-operative
Jumping in leaf piles, throwing leaves, running through woodland — autumn gives children natural activities that produce genuinely joyful images. They're entertained, which means they're relaxed, which means the photos are authentic.
Fewer crowds
Summer hotspots are quieter in autumn. You get more space, fewer strangers in the background, and a sense of calm that's harder to achieve in peak season.
