What to Wear for Autumn Family Photos

Autumn colour photography is one of the easiest to dress for — warm, earthy tones are everywhere and almost everything works. My general recommendations:

• Excellent: Camel, rust, burnt orange, terracotta, deep green, warm burgundy, cream, denim
• Good: Mustard yellow, warm brown, forest green, rich plum
• Avoid: Neon colours, stark black (can work for adults but not for small children), very pale grey
• Layers work beautifully: Chunky knit jumpers, gilets, hats and scarves — cosy autumn layers look wonderful in photos
• Wellies are practical and look charming, especially on children

Timing: When Is Peak Autumn Colour in England?

In the Cambridge and East England region, peak autumn colour typically falls between:

• Early October: First colour appearing — good for early bookings
• Mid-October (15–25 Oct): Peak colour period — most reliable window for golden woodland
• Late October–early November: Leaves beginning to fall — beautiful carpet phase
