Choosing the images for your wedding album from a gallery of 500 to 800 photographs can feel overwhelming. There is a process that makes it manageable — and that results in an album you are genuinely proud of rather than one you wish contained slightly different images.
The most common mistake in album selection is choosing images one by one based on which photographs look best in isolation. The album is a sequential narrative — it has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Choose images that advance the story rather than just images that photograph well individually.
A good album sequence: preparations — first look or ceremony arrival — the ceremony — portraits — reception — speeches and first dance — moments toward the end of the evening. Each section needs a few key images and the album needs to flow through them in a way that mirrors the emotional arc of the day.
Step 1: Go through your full gallery and mark any image you are considering with a star or favourite. Do this pass quickly, on instinct — do not overthink. You will probably mark 150 to 250 images.
Step 2: Go through your favourites list and remove duplicates. For any sequence of similar images, keep the strongest one. You are aiming to reduce to approximately 80 to 120 images.
Step 3: Apply the story test. Does this cover the whole narrative of the day? Are any key moments missing? Are there too many images from one part of the day and too few from another? Adjust accordingly.
Once you have made your image selection, the album designer (either the photographer or a specialist designer) will create the spreads. You will be given the opportunity to review and request changes. At this stage, trust the layout unless something feels genuinely wrong — professional album designers know how images work together across a spread in ways that are not always obvious from a screen preview.
Album design is included in selected packages. Get in touch if you are ready to begin the selection process for your album.
