A Christmas family photoshoot is one of the few occasions where the whole family is together, dressed up, and in a genuinely celebratory mood. Done well, these images become the ones that go on the Christmas card, the mantelpiece, and the wall. Done poorly, they become the photos everyone argues over at Christmas dinner. Here's how to make it the former.
Book now for December sessions. Autumn foliage is still available for outdoor sessions.
Peak booking period. Ideal for outdoor sessions in frost and bare trees, and indoor sessions with Christmas decorations.
Final chance before Christmas. Outdoor light is limited; indoor sessions with Christmas trees work beautifully.
Some photographers offer Christmas morning sessions — genuinely magical, very limited availability.
The honest advice: book as early as possible. Christmas sessions fill by mid-October in most years, especially for the most popular dates (weekends in November–December).
The two main options are outdoor natural settings (woodland, parkland, gardens) and indoor sessions (your home, a venue, or a photographer's studio with Christmas props and lighting). Both work beautifully — the choice depends on your family and the look you want.
Classic Red & Green
Timeless Christmas palette — works well outdoors in woodland or against snowy or frosted backgrounds.
Winter Neutrals
Cream, ivory, camel, and warm grey — elegant and works beautifully for indoor sessions and fireplace settings.
Jewel Tones
Deep burgundy, forest green, navy — rich and festive without being predictable.
Plaid & Tartan
Coordinated plaid in complementary colours makes a seasonal statement that photographs with texture and warmth.
All Matching White
Clean, striking, especially for outdoor snowy or frosted backgrounds — but requires confident commitment from everyone.
Coordinated Doesn't Mean Identical
Choose a palette and let each person pick their own version — it feels more natural and genuinely represents the family.
Young children at Christmas are overexcited, overtired, and often mid-sugar-rush. This is actually a feature, not a bug — the genuine energy and joy of a child at Christmas translates brilliantly into photographs. Let them be themselves. The best images usually happen between the posed shots.
Practical tips: schedule sessions in the morning when children are freshest; bring a favourite snack for breaks; don't over-negotiate about smiling; let the photographer do their job — they've done this before.
