Most commissioned photography is organised around life events: weddings, births, graduations, anniversaries. These are moments where the social expectation of documentation is established and the logistics of gathering people are, in some sense, already arranged. Friendship photoshoots are different: they have to be deliberately chosen, deliberately organised, and deliberately prioritised. This is both why they're less common and why, when they happen, they tend to produce photographs that people return to with particular emotional frequency.
Good friends — the kind of friendship that spans years and geography and the various trajectories that adult lives take — are among the most significant relationships most people have. They are also among the least photographed, outside of phone snapshots at social events where the photography is incidental rather than intentional. A friendship photoshoot says: this relationship deserves documentation. That is, photographically speaking, exactly right.
The best locations for friendship photoshoots are meaningful rather than merely beautiful: the area of the city you all lived in together, the park you used to walk through, the neighbourhood with the café you spent weekend mornings in. Personal geography makes photographs that mean something specific rather than generically lovely. When the setting is part of the shared history, the resulting images carry that context even without explanation.
For clients without strong location preferences, Cambridge offers exceptional options: the Backs and riverside, Grantchester Meadows, the market area, and various college grounds (with access arrangements) all provide beautiful and varied settings for friend group portraiture.
Groups of two to six people are ideal for friendship photoshoots. I mix directed group portraits — everyone facing the camera, properly composed — with more informal activity-based direction: walking together, talking, laughing at something specific, any shared activity that's part of the friendship's actual texture. The formal shots will be the ones you use for prints and sharing; the informal ones will be the ones you love most.
Sessions run 60–90 minutes and move through two or three nearby locations. There's no pressure, no rushed countdown, and no requirement to perform happiness — the direction is designed to draw out genuine expressions and natural interaction rather than demand them.
Several life events create natural milestones for friend group photography: before major relocations (when a friend is moving abroad or to another city); around significant birthdays; when a long friendship group is naturally dispersing; at reunions after significant time apart. These are the scenarios where the photographs are most wanted and most valued — because the friends involved are aware that the gathering itself is significant, and the photographs will carry that weight in memory.
