The most common question from new clients who are enquiring about photography is whether they should book a mini session or a full session. This guide covers the practical differences, so you can make the right decision for your specific situation.
A mini session runs for 20 to 30 minutes at a single location. A full session runs for 60 to 90 minutes at one or more locations. A mini session has a tight, specific brief — one family at one set — and delivers 10 to 20 images. A full session covers more ground, more variety of poses and settings, more interaction time with the photographer, and delivers 40 to 75 images.
Choose a mini session if: you want a quick annual update (the children look different from last year; you want a new set of family portraits); you are booking for a specific seasonal theme (Christmas, Halloween, spring blossom); your children are very young and struggle to maintain engagement for a longer session; your budget is limited; or you simply want a small, focused set of images rather than a full gallery.
Mini sessions work exceptionally well for families with babies and toddlers. A 20-minute slot is often more than enough for a child under two; a 90-minute full session can become exhausting for everyone.
Choose a full session if: you want a wide variety of images from multiple settings; you are building a personal brand or business portfolio and need many different types of photographs; you want to include multiple locations; you have a specific extended family shot or a particular vision that requires time to set up; or you are booking a maternity or newborn session that benefits from an unhurried, relaxed pace.
Mini sessions are priced lower than full sessions — both in session fee and delivered image count. They are not a "budget" option; they are an appropriately priced option for a shorter service. A full session costs more because it delivers substantially more time, more images, and more flexibility.
