"I hate having my photo taken." It's the most common thing I hear before a portrait session. And by the end of every session, it's the last thing people feel. Here's why natural, relaxed portrait photography consistently produces more beautiful results — and how to make the most of yours.
Traditional portraiture asks people to stand in specific ways, hold their chin at a precise angle, and produce a smile on command. The problem? Our bodies know when something feels unnatural — and so does the camera.
Forced poses create muscle tension, stiff body language, and smiles that don't reach the eyes. These things are nearly impossible to hide in a photograph. The camera is brutally honest about authenticity.
Natural portrait photography doesn't mean pointing a camera at someone and hoping for the best. It means:
“The best portrait is one that reveals the subject's true self — their warmth, their humour, their quiet confidence. That can only come from a relaxed and trusting session.”
— Yana Skakun
Natural light — specifically soft, directional light — is the most flattering thing for portraits. This is why I prefer to shoot outdoors during the golden hour, or indoors near large windows.
Harsh direct sunlight (particularly midday sun) creates unflattering shadows under the eyes and nose. Overcast skies act as a natural softbox — even, diffused, and beautiful for all skin tones.
When choosing your session time, trust your photographer's guidance on the best light. It makes an enormous difference.
