Newborn photography safety is non-negotiable. Every pose, prop, and wrapping technique used in professional newborn photography has been assessed for the specific physiological vulnerabilities of babies in their first two weeks of life. Behind the serene images are careful, deliberate safety practices that parents deserve to understand.
Newborns (babies 5–14 days old) are photographed in their natural sleepy, curled state — which is safe and comfortable for them at that age. Their joints have the same natural flexibility that they had in the womb. However, this means that certain poses which look natural in photographs require careful technique: some are composite images, some require parental hands to be in position until the final moment, and all require a photographer trained specifically in newborn posing.
Several classic newborn poses — the "froggy" (chin resting on hands), the "taco" (knees tucked to forehead), and some basket setups — are composite images. This means two or more photographs are merged: one where the parent's hands support the head, another where they support the body. The supporting hands are then edited out. This technique allows the image to achieve the desired look while ensuring the baby is fully supported at every moment.
Any photographer who claims to achieve freestanding poses of newborns without parental support and composite editing should be asked detailed questions about their technique.
