The word that consistently appears in feedback from portrait clients — the quality they most often say was missing from previous experiences and most valuable about sessions with me — is "relaxed." Not just comfortable, not merely professional, but genuinely relaxed: the feeling that the session was a pleasant way to spend time rather than an ordeal to be endured in exchange for photographs.
This matters photographically as well as personally. Tension shows in portraits. The slight stiffness of someone who has never been in front of a professional camera, the fixed expression of someone trying to look how they think a photographed person should look, the eyes of someone mentally tracking whether they're doing it right — these things read in the image and they're the precise opposite of what a good portrait should capture.
Creating relaxed conditions for portrait sessions is a skill that goes well beyond reassurance. Relaxation is created through very specific, practical methods: the session structure (starting slowly with the most naturally comfortable elements before asking more of the subject), the direction style (using activity and conversation rather than static posing commands), the pacing (moving through the session at the subject's pace rather than a predetermined schedule), and the energy the photographer brings into the space (calm, confident, unhurried).
I also pay significant attention to the pre-session experience. Clients who arrive for their portrait session already knowing what to expect — where we'll go, roughly what will happen, what the photographs will look like — are calmer than clients arriving into uncertainty. Thorough pre-session communication reduces the anxiety that most people bring to professional photography, before the session even begins.
There is a distinction, visible in photographs, between a real expression and a performed one. Real expressions — genuine laughter, genuine thoughtfulness, genuine warmth — have a quality that performed expressions can't match. Real laughter creases around the eyes. Real calm has stillness in the face as well as the body. Real warmth shows in the way someone orients toward what they're looking at.
All of my direction during portrait sessions is aimed at producing real expressions rather than performed ones. If I ask you to laugh, it will be because I've said something actually funny. If I ask for a softer expression, it will be because I've created conditions in which softness is natural rather than demanded.
The right environment has a significant effect on how relaxed subjects feel during a session. Open, uncrowded outdoor spaces — Grantchester Meadows, the riverside, quiet college gardens with access — allow people to move naturally and unselfconsciously in ways that busy public spaces or enclosed studio environments don't always permit. I'll always recommend locations based as much on the kind of experience they create as on their photographic qualities.
