Summer Sunflower Mini Sessions: Fields of Gold & Family Joy

Sunflower fields are one of the most visually distinctive settings for summer family photography. The tall yellow flowers, the deep blue of a summer sky, the way a child disappears into the rows and then pops out between the stems — it creates images that are immediately and unmistakably summer, and that family members will want to look at for years.

When Sunflowers Peak in England

UK sunflower crops typically peak from mid-July through August, with the exact timing depending on when they were planted and that year's temperatures. Cambridgeshire and the surrounding counties have several commercial sunflower fields that open to the public in peak season — these are the locations used for summer mini sessions.

The best time of day to photograph in a sunflower field is the golden hour — one to two hours before sunset. The light at that time of day comes in low and warm, and the flowers themselves, which face east in the morning and rotate to follow the sun, are at their most photogenic in the afternoon when the light is on them front-on.

What to Expect

Summer sunflower mini sessions are 25 minutes each. The location is typically 15 to 25 minutes from Cambridge city centre. Parking is always available at sunflower field venues. The sessions are held in the evening from 6:30pm to capture the golden hour light, with the last slot at approximately 8pm.

What to Wear

Bright colours compete with the field; neutral and warm tones complement it. White dresses on children look beautiful against yellow flowers. Cream, pale blue, rust, and olive are the best family palette choices. Avoid bright yellow — you will disappear into the background.
