Almost every guide to what to wear for a portrait session is written with women in mind. Men are frequently an afterthought — a brief paragraph at the end about “a well-fitted suit.” This guide is for men who have booked a portrait session, or who are part of a couples or family session and want to think seriously about their own clothing choices. What you wear as a man in a portrait — whether that is a headshot, a solo portrait, a couples session, or a family photograph — matters as much as any other participant.
📋 In this guide:
In men's portrait photography, fit consistently dominates over brand, price, and style. A well-fitted inexpensive shirt in a flattering colour will produce better portraits than an expensive shirt in the wrong size. The camera amplifies poor fit in ways that are not always obvious in a mirror — excess fabric at the shoulders, a collar that gaps, trousers that bunch at the seat.
Shoulder seam
The shoulder seam of a shirt or jacket should sit exactly at the edge of your shoulder. If it sits past the shoulder, the garment is too large. This is the most visible fit signal in portrait photographs.
Collar
A shirt collar, when buttoned, should sit comfortably close to the neck without pulling. A collar that pulls creates a strained, uncomfortable appearance. One or two fingers of space is correct.
Chest and torso
A shirt or jacket should follow the line of the body without pulling at the buttons or billowing with excess fabric. Slim-fit is not required — a regular fit in the correct size photographs well.
Trouser length
Trousers should break slightly at the shoe. Too long creates accordion bunching at the ankle; too short looks unfinished. Neither photographs well in full-length shots.
Men's portrait colour choices are often more conservative than women's — and that is not a problem. The most reliably photogenic palette for men:
Navy blue
One of the most universally flattering and photographically clean colours for men. Works in both formal (suit) and casual (shirt, jumper) contexts. Avoids the harshness of black while retaining depth.
Charcoal grey
A dark, sophisticated neutral that works in almost any portrait context. Suits, blazers, and fine knitwear in charcoal are consistently strong in photographs.
Warm white and cream
Clean, open, and flattering. A well-fitted cream or warm white shirt creates a clean, fresh base that works in outdoor, indoor, and studio settings.
Sage and forest green
Increasingly popular for men in portrait photography. Muted greens work particularly well in outdoor natural settings and add visual interest without being loud.
Burgundy and deep wine
A rich, warm tone that creates striking portraits. Works well in autumn and winter sessions, and in indoor settings with warm light.
Camel and warm tan
A warm, earthy neutral particularly effective in outdoor golden-hour sessions. Linen or fine knitwear in camel creates a relaxed, natural portrait quality.
The upper body is the primary focus of most portrait photography. It receives the most compositional and lighting attention. The main options:
Layers create visual interest, suggest structure and consideration, and give photographs compositional depth. For men in portrait sessions:
Blazer or sports jacket
One of the strongest portrait additions for men. A blazer in navy, charcoal, tweed, or a warm neutral adds immediate visual elevation without the full formality of a suit. It frames the face and creates shoulder structure that photographs exceptionally well.
Suit jacket paired with open shirt
A suit jacket worn without a tie, over an open-collar shirt, hits an exact note of elevated-casual that works for almost all portrait types between headshot and lifestyle family session.
Casual overshirt or linen jacket
For outdoor lifestyle and family sessions: an open overshirt or linen jacket over a simple base layer. Relaxed and natural without looking underdressed.
Overcoat or peacoat (winter/autumn)
A well-fitted overcoat in a deep neutral — charcoal, camel, or navy — creates outstanding portrait images in outdoor autumn and winter sessions. The weight and structure of a quality coat reads immediately in photographs.
In head-and-shoulder portraits (headshots, close portraits), trousers are rarely visible. In full-length, couples, and family photographs, they matter:
Professional headshot
Smart — suit or blazer with a well-fitted shirt in a clean colour. The tie is optional; an open collar reads as confident rather than underdressed in 2026.
Solo portrait session
Smart-casual to smart — a blazer with jeans, a suit without a tie, or quality separates. Should feel elevated from everyday without feeling costumed.
Couples session
Match the formality register of your partner. If she is in a flowing dress or smart outfit, you should be in a blazer or at least a well-chosen shirt and chinos.
Family portrait session
Coordinate with the family palette in a relaxed but considered way. A linen shirt or fine-knit jumper in the palette's tones. Should feel like you at your natural best on a good day.
Documentary/lifestyle session
Your genuine best everyday clothing — the good version of your actual personal style, not borrowed formality.
